Let's plan a meeting... I'm unemployed and flexible, Sarah says she's free after 5:00PM all week (unless her schedule changes), when are other people free? Can people come to Staten Island (=food)? or should it be bluestockings? We'll try to contact some people who aren't on these forums... but what's good for those that are?

thurs

8:30 might be kinda late to start for me and leanne, cause i get off work at 4 and would have to kill a lot of time in the city, and leanne has to go to school the next morining in queens. Although Hunter might work as a location for future stuff. My friend Adam Israel from All City says he can get a room there like any day of the week.

But even if we can't coodinate thursday for everyone, we could fill ya in on sunday and you could give yr input them. It'll be a more fun day anyway, i'll probably cook a shitload of food and we'll have more time and people.

so either way, we'll probably see each other soon and get crackin on all these projects...

notes from thursday!

Hey All --

Sarah here sending out some meeting notes from yesterday. Ok, so here goes:

Who was there:
Sarah Misled
Sarah Dinan
Leanne
Jeremy
Isis
Brendan
Jacob

So we met at Bluestockings to discuss some of the things we wanna work on together. We were joined by Jacob, a junior in HS who volunteers at Bluestockings. Welcome Jacob!

We started off with some plan to go to the Grassroots Media Conference (tommorow from 10am to 5:15pm, 5 bucks if yr under 21, this is the link http://www.nycgrassrootsmedia.org/conference) Also that pillow fight is happening in union sq. at 2pm. Maybe we can check that out.

Then at 7pm is the Urban Word Teen Poetry Slam Finals taking place in Bklyn -- here's the info. Apparently the tickets are almost sold out. I have to call tommorow tand try to buy them over the phone. So let me know if you wanna come so i can see how many tix to get (they're $12). It's really a great event.

Sunday we're have a bunch of you over at our house. Hopefully the weather will be half decent.

Anyway, enough announcements. We spoke about the idea of YELL passing on its leadership to younger students at the renaissance school. Everyone felt that thre wasn't enough interest among the younger students to continue the organization once the current members graduate. (which is kinda sad). So the question is how YELL will exist in the future outside of TRS. What will its focus be? Where will it be based? Lots of questions...

We discussed making flyers for NCOR as well as getting started on the split zine we've been talking about. We realized that creating the content fpr all these materials will depend on us figuring out organizations will be working together -- especially in the case of the split zine, since it's meant to represent our collective efforts and aspirations. Members of YELL were wondering what kind of content they'd create for their half of the zine. We brainstormed some ideas like: stories about how you got into youth activism, recollections of events like the annual conference, bullet points on what you've learned from working in the organization, interviews with students, etc. So hopefully we'll get all this accomplished by the anarchist bookfair on April 14th! (we'll be having separate meetings for planning that workshop pretty soon).

Ok, I'm putting all these note up on our web forums so we can discuss all this stuff more. If you don't already have an account, go to misled-youth.org and create one. Then you can post in forums, have your own blog, and join and start groups.

hope to see you this weekend!

some details

i'll give some details of what happened today.

who was there:
me
nick
brendan
gabby
leanne
stephanie
matt

People showed up to our house between 2 and 3 or 3:30. We ate curry and baked apples and noodles that gabby brought. We chilled a little and caught up with each other. It looks like we'll be discussing the future of misled youth and yell together once yell has their weekly meeting tomorrow and discusses things internally.

So the main thing we worked on was our workshop for the anarchist bookfair on april 14th. I think we made some good progress. What we did was try out the rough idea of the workshop on ourselves, asking each other questions like, "how do you learn best?", "what do you want to learn?" and "how can we help each other learn these things?"

We decided to leave out the media clip idea cause it seemed like it would detract from the focus of this workshop. We introduce ourselves individually and as organizations, and then let everyone know about the goals and reasons for the workshop. For the question "What do you want to learn?" we thought the best approach would be to allow everyone to list the top 5 or 10 things they want to learn about on one big piece of paper, and then share. We also want to use a "talking object", meaning that people would be able to speak when they were holding the object, and pass it to the next person who wanted to speak. We have yet to figure out how much we'll be able to allow everyone the chance to network amongst themselves to develop their learning plans in this workshop, and how much will have to wait for a follow up discussion. We want this workshop to be able to stand on its own, but at the same time we want to do way more than is possible in just one hour. Also we realize that not everyone in the workshop will be able to come to follow up events. One way we think we can still support those people in starting learning projects is to give out a packet that would have advice and resources for doing this. Also our website will be a way for everyone to stay in touch and share their progress.

We'll be setting up an IRC chat on our site this week so we can communicate in real time.

Those are the main things i remember from today. Others are welcome to post their thoughts and observations on what happened. At 6:45 everyone had to run out to catch the ferry. We had a good time and hopefully we'll do it again soon.

one more thing...

One other thing that got brought up at the meeting was that we wanted to start a group based on our interests, and a bunch of people were interested in poi, so there's going to be a poi learning group. I'm gonna try to set that up on the site so that people can join it, coordinate meet-ups, talk about it, basically make it as easy as possible to get started.

After the meeting I was thinking about how the conference is going to probably have a heavy zine focus (I'm guessing), so I was trying to think of how we could incorporate zines. I already started a zine group, which got pushed aside because of more pressing promotional materials that need to get made, but I was thinking maybe the zine group could get revived? If people feel they have time to put stuff together or want to meet up and brainstorm a collaborative zine (or just work together to make a bunch of individual, personal zines... there was a discussion about this here).

I didn't see zines on anyone's self-education lists (even mine) but I think zines are just one of those things that everyone's interested in, as it combines visual art, writing, music, photography, etc. If people want to get some kind of group together, I'd be into it

It's just an idea - zines are a bit of a commitment, so if people don't feel like they have the time then we shouldn't do it.

Oh! as a sidenote, me and sarah just remembered we had a cool calendar set up that we'd like to start using for events and deadlines (since there seem to be so many now).

I'll try to get the poi group and the calendar set up tomorrow...

Is anyone interested in

Is anyone interested in coming over next Sunday? I don't know if people are up for coming out here every week, but if so, that would be cool. We could have a combination of chilling, Misled Youth discussion, and maybe some collaborative/self-education activities.

Alternatively, we could meet somewhere else, but our place makes it easy to have free food around. (Especially once our garden starts producing produce in the summer. Smiling)

Suggestions?

Brendan

hmmm

i dont think anyone left stuff out, other than we have to make sure not to alienate people. i remember that being a big gabby push and it makes a lot of sense.

as for next sunday, i may be in albany visiting a friend. if not, i should be able to go.
as for meetings in general, i feel we should be mixing up the locations so it makes the meeting more exciting. it doesn't have to be other people's houses either (nobody is coming to mine, its way out of everyone's way). I mean it in the broader sense of random places that someone has been interested in going to. I imagine a park meeting when it gets nicer would be really cool.

Oh, i'm interested in seeing those pictures you took. If you can, post em up or something.

Yeah...

Yeah, we'll definitely have meetings in parks when it gets warmer. I agree that mixing locations is cool. Bluestockings is one place we could use again.

Sarah put one of the pictures on the front page of the site... just scroll down. I didn't get anything spectacular, just a few snapshots from one angle. The light wasn't so good, and I didn't want to disrupt things with a flash. Anyway, next time I'll take more pictures. Smiling
