Today I was writing some papers for school and I realized I don't really have any good work music. This got me to wondering if any of you guys know any good work music. I define "work music" as any music that I can passively listen to while noting that it has a groove that gets me focused. I dunno, some albums can just lock me into whatever i'm doing. I'm finding that Ted Leo & the Pharmacists: Shake The Sheets is a great album for it. But otherwise, I got nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Matt.

btw: for anyone that was at the fair on saturday, I finally sewed that YELL patch on. I'm en route to the Misled one.

"Take This Job and Shove it"

dj shadow makes good work music. also dub reggae and surf music is nice. basically anything without lyrics. That clash album "sandinista" is pretty good non-distracting stuff (I'm listening to it right now). I guess it depends on the work you're doing - if you're in a rush reggae wouldn't work, but ska might.

This reminds me of something really cool sarah got me to do once - play your favorite song and try to "draw the music" (I know I sound like a hippie kindergarten teacher, but trust me). it's like using your pen as an instrument - you can make really crazy stuff. it works for random / abstract things, but try applying it to a tangible thing like a self portrait. it makes you really appreciate music AND drawing.

I tried doing it to the song "Mighty And Superior" by Conflict. That's a really intense song. I did it to world/inferno once too...

Focus Music

I listen to a lot of The Album Leaf, Do Make Say Think and Godspeed You Black Emperor! when I'm writing. Those three artists have very minimal to no lyrics but has a lot of personality. It also has that epic repetition that leaves you transfixed on whatever you're working on (especially Godspeed). Django Reinhardt is fun too. Its jazz and more upbeat. J Dilla's Donuts album is good if you're into melow soulful underground hiphop. That one has very little words too.

I feel like Frank Zappa would be cool to "draw." Its pretty crazy but once you get used to it, it can be work music too.
