new misled youth materials!!!

i think we really need to make eye catching and up to date flyers and stuff to let people know what we're working on and how they can get involved. What do they need to say? What are different images/styles we can use? What are all the methods we can use to make them?

i'm gonna post some more in depth ideas soon, what do the rest of you think?

examples for the PIY workshop

ok, so the YELL conference is in 17 days, we need to start getting the example stencil, screen and linoleum block ready for the workshop. What designs should we do? Who's gonna do what? I am willing to help with one of the examples.

here are the notes from last week on the workshop:

1. PIY Workshop Notes

- structure:

1) Introduce Misled Youth and the importance of self-education

2) Talk about the importance of printing

3) Hands-on printing

4) Questions and answers

- maybe we could have an airbrush for stencils? Ceecee said she had one.

- we should have handout packets. Ceecee offered to bring linoleum handouts

- Sarah offered write the agenda and to bring craft paper and a bucket to wash screens and stuff. Nick offered to bring ink.

- the designs we make for people to print at the workshop should be focused on printmaking, self-empowerment, or Misled Youth. Most everyone volunteered to make designs.

- we wanted to ask YELL when we need a workshop description, and if we can help with organizing the conference in any way but nobody from YELL was there.

let's start brainstorming some designs!
printed some patches today

Today we finally printed some patches, though we had mixed results and only made a small batch of successful ones. Here's what we learned:

1. white ink, particularly very opaque white ink, dries really fast and clogs up the screens. I guess it's hard for them to make it opaque so they have to put more pigment in it or something. Next time we're gonna add retarder.

2. coarse fabric doesn't absorb the ink properly. finding the right fabric is essential.

3. if you make too many passes with the squeegee, the ink will bleed through too much and get all over the other side. When this happens, you either gotta make a few prints on paper to run off the excess or wash of the screen and start all over. it sucks...

4. when you burn the screen, there should be a good sized border around the printable area, otherwise it's hard to squeegee (especially the tops and bottoms)

Self education = learning shit the hard way. Now we have that much more knowledge. I think it was a combination of these four things that made it very difficult to diagnose the problem at first - in the same pass, some patches were coming out too heavy and some barely at all. Next time we'll do better.

all this reinforces our plans to create our own silkscreen space. if we could work with oil based ink we wouldn't have to worry about drying, plus we'd be able to scrape it all back in the container and reuse it later. and if we had space for a woodshop (and some money for a table saw) we could make the screens ourselves, which would save us a fortune. plus we could be there all the time, and I'm sure we'd get the hang of it a lot faster if we could just spend one solid day in the right kind of facility. getting this space requires filling this house we're looking at. I wrote all about it in another thread.

silkscreen team

misled youth banner

this is one of our first collaborative art projects...what will we do? We've done quite a few graphics before, we have a cool logo and some kind of comics book characters and a graphics with two kids reading a book and holding spraypaint that says, "because school doesn't teach us what we really want to know". We might want to have a slogan like that on the banner, and maybe put the website in the corner too. It might be hard to paint people realistically on the banner, one thing we could do is depict our "tools of the trade" like wrenches and paintbrushes and what have you. Stenciling a large, detailed image might be tricky, maybe we could screenprint the banner. Though you can get a pretty good stenciled image if you use a brush for more control. Stencils would probably look good for lettering though. We definitely need cool lettering. How big should it be? Most folding tables are about 6 feet wide and two feet off the ground. We need a way to hang the banner, like with some string. We could even sew patches on it to add color and texture. What color cloth should we use? we should really think about how we want to represent/express ourselves. Tp me misled youth is about kids taking matters into our own hands, charting our own path, learning and experimenting, not accepting pre-made notions of how to live our lives. let's make a banner that tells people that!

--sarah

mobile art squad

$ilk $creening

I, personally, am almost out of money and the time has come for me to do a spurt of work to save a bunch of money so I can coast for another six months or so. It looks like I might end up doing some landscaping, then doing the bonnaroo festival security we do every year in june (which sucks but pays a lot of money).

I hate doing this - I would really prefer to do something that's useful to my life and somewhat more interesting than stand around in the hot sun and watch a bunch of tie-dyed fuck heads choke on their glow sticks. I applied for a job that I thought was doing something similar to Misled Youth, but I found out they're really not that similar, and I don't really want to do design-for-hire at this stage in my artistic career.

So, I was discussing with sarah the possibility of screen-printing band shirts and patches and opening up a by-the-kids, for-the-kids type distro, funded by misled youth. We could divide the money equally among the workers. Certain band-patches sell really well, and we can undercut interpunk if we sell em for a dollar a piece. It's still kinda capitalizing off of DIY - I know. But I figure, we're doing it in a grassroots, worker-run sorta way (and youth-run), and it's sorta selling out more working for a fucked-up bullshit festival like bonnaroo than silk screening patches with friends and selling them for a dollar a piece. Plus, if kids are gonna buy patches anyway, might as well buy them from a bunch of kids who're learning to screen print than from Freaks or something.

What do you guys think? There were plans once to do a Misled Youth Record Label and a Zine Distro. That stuff could potentially rise out of this, if this became successful. Eventually, we want misled youth to raise enough money to get our own space to do stuff like this. For now though, in NYC at least, there's ABC No Rio.

silkscreen team
