i think we really need to make eye catching and up to date flyers and stuff to let people know what we're working on and how they can get involved. What do they need to say? What are different images/styles we can use? What are all the methods we can use to make them?

i'm gonna post some more in depth ideas soon, what do the rest of you think?

examples for the PIY workshop

ok, so the YELL conference is in 17 days, we need to start getting the example stencil, screen and linoleum block ready for the workshop. What designs should we do? Who's gonna do what? I am willing to help with one of the examples.

here are the notes from last week on the workshop:

1. PIY Workshop Notes

- structure:

1) Introduce Misled Youth and the importance of self-education

2) Talk about the importance of printing

3) Hands-on printing

4) Questions and answers

- maybe we could have an airbrush for stencils? Ceecee said she had one.

- we should have handout packets. Ceecee offered to bring linoleum handouts

- Sarah offered write the agenda and to bring craft paper and a bucket to wash screens and stuff. Nick offered to bring ink.

- the designs we make for people to print at the workshop should be focused on printmaking, self-empowerment, or Misled Youth. Most everyone volunteered to make designs.

- we wanted to ask YELL when we need a workshop description, and if we can help with organizing the conference in any way but nobody from YELL was there.

let's start brainstorming some designs!

I'm interested in studying some aspects of art in a more disciplined way than i usually get a chance to, and i think having other people studying the same things would help me stay focused. Some topics i want to work on soon are human anatomy, general drawing and observations skills, professional painting techniques, and understanding perspective. I have a few good books that relate to these topics:

Keys to Drawing -- has a bunch of exercises that help you with drawing techniques and observation

Some anatomy books by Andrew Loomis - these classic books are out of print but you can download them as e-books. They look really helpful and teach you a lot of tricks for remembering proportions and stuff

Modelling the Figure in Clay -- This book shows you step by step how to build up a figure in clay from the skeleton to the muscles and skin. I started following it but never got bask a few bones. It's a great way to understand anatomy in depth.

The Artist's Guide to Sketching is all about drawing in different places and capturing what you see in a sketchbook

There's also the Natual Way to draw by Kimon Nicolaides which is a super rigerous program that takes a year to complete.

so who would be interested in studying some art stuff? I would like to kow about other books and resources as well. We could set goals for ourselves and check in every week, and also post sketches and things online.

Alright, so it's gonna be held up at my house in harlem, if that's ok with everyone. we can meet downtown and I can bring you all up or we can meet up here. If you can get your own cutting tools and inks tell me before friday, if you can't I will buy them and share them. Bring inks of any color you want and cool paper of any style you want (wrapping paper, wall paper, computer paper, etc.). And if you want we can dish out our linoleum thursday and cut out designs so we don't have to spend a lot of time cutting on friday. Questions? Comments? Complaints? Hit me up.

Clarifications about the mobile art squad

Hey kids. On thursday we talked a lot about things the mobile art squad would/could be doing, and by the end I was sort of left with a list. For clarity's sake, I'm gonna put it up here and if there's anything to add, we'll add it on. I can buy all the stuff this week or this weekend (hopefully with a generous donation from my school). Also, Gabe spoke with his mother about using the print room at his old school C&C and she says it's a possibility. The other two locations suggested were my house and I think Sarah D's (?). If anyone else wants in on it or can offer up a space, that'd be nice too. Oh! as an aside, they caught that freak pervert from my block, so there's no longer a danger of rape or torture, if we choose to have anything up here at my place. Anyway this is the list:

-8 small lino blocks (somewhere in the area of 3" by 5")
-1 nice sized lino block for the PIY workshop (in the area of 8" by 10")
-2 brayers
-2 packages of cutting tools (two handles/package)
-a tub of printing ink (size anyone? 2 oz? more?)
-Two yards of canvas/linen/whatever
-Giant tubs of acrylic and/or fabric paints
-any other random art supplies we can bring from home (charcoals, pencils, newsprint, sketch paper, paints, paint brushes, etc. cause I know we all got it)
What other things do people want?

Also I got the ok from stewart (my dad) about selling any kind of prints, patches, buttons whatever at street fairs. He says there's ways to pick locations where there'd be a lot of people interested in what we have to sell and what we have to say.
Plus, we should do that bookmaking thing sooner than later. We should make some sweet sketch books so we can do some sweet sketching.

UPDATE:
well I'm updating here because my computer won't load the comments page for some reason. I have three eight oz tubs of opaque screen printing ink in: metallic black, sort of like raspberryish pink and glo-in-the-dark. so I guess I'll bring those on thursday. Also this place by my house sells teeshirts for very cheap of all different colors and sizes, I'm not sure of the price, but over christmas when I stenciled shirts for my family, we bought them there.
um... I guess that's it. alright. cool!

ANOTHER UPDATE:
gabe's comments apparently don't load correctly either, so he says that to use c&c we'd need someone who works there to supervise us. If we were at c&c we basically wouldn't have to buy anything but linoleum. so maybe.

misled youth banner

this is one of our first collaborative art projects...what will we do? We've done quite a few graphics before, we have a cool logo and some kind of comics book characters and a graphics with two kids reading a book and holding spraypaint that says, "because school doesn't teach us what we really want to know". We might want to have a slogan like that on the banner, and maybe put the website in the corner too. It might be hard to paint people realistically on the banner, one thing we could do is depict our "tools of the trade" like wrenches and paintbrushes and what have you. Stenciling a large, detailed image might be tricky, maybe we could screenprint the banner. Though you can get a pretty good stenciled image if you use a brush for more control. Stencils would probably look good for lettering though. We definitely need cool lettering. How big should it be? Most folding tables are about 6 feet wide and two feet off the ground. We need a way to hang the banner, like with some string. We could even sew patches on it to add color and texture. What color cloth should we use? we should really think about how we want to represent/express ourselves. Tp me misled youth is about kids taking matters into our own hands, charting our own path, learning and experimenting, not accepting pre-made notions of how to live our lives. let's make a banner that tells people that!
