this is one of our first collaborative art projects...what will we do? We've done quite a few graphics before, we have a cool logo and some kind of comics book characters and a graphics with two kids reading a book and holding spraypaint that says, "because school doesn't teach us what we really want to know". We might want to have a slogan like that on the banner, and maybe put the website in the corner too. It might be hard to paint people realistically on the banner, one thing we could do is depict our "tools of the trade" like wrenches and paintbrushes and what have you. Stenciling a large, detailed image might be tricky, maybe we could screenprint the banner. Though you can get a pretty good stenciled image if you use a brush for more control. Stencils would probably look good for lettering though. We definitely need cool lettering. How big should it be? Most folding tables are about 6 feet wide and two feet off the ground. We need a way to hang the banner, like with some string. We could even sew patches on it to add color and texture. What color cloth should we use? we should really think about how we want to represent/express ourselves. Tp me misled youth is about kids taking matters into our own hands, charting our own path, learning and experimenting, not accepting pre-made notions of how to live our lives. let's make a banner that tells people that!

hmmm... banner...

I think it would be cool to do a distressed background with stencils and textures, and then a really crisp foreground with either layers of stencils or silkscreens or both, like a multicolored image or something. our table should stand out a lot, and I'm really interested in layering things.

we never use color... but I think we should. I don't wanna use the "school doesn't teach us what we really wanna know" design because you can't tell the kids are holding a spray can and a wrench, which makes it sorta pointless. I'm gonna make a new series based on that idea where you can actually tell what the kids are doing.

right now I'm working on the band patches we're gonna silkscreen on thursday. plus me and brendan are working a lot lately smashing things, rummaging and hauling wood. it's draining and we're working ten hour days. I really want to do more creative stuff like make banners and posters, and hopefully we'll get a chance to soon.

we should invest a lot in this banner - we'll probably use it for a long time, and it'll be the first impression a lot of people will get of us.

anyway, to answer your questions:

size: i don't know - depends on the table

color: I'd steer clear of high-saturated bright colors and cool colors, maybe a dulled warm color like maroon, browns, or cream. dark green's ok maybe. I guess it's complementary to maroon, which would attract people's attention. might remind people too much of chistmas though. I don't know, misled youth doesn't have a color identity because we always use photocopies. we should think about it though - this site needs color too.

depicting people is really hard. especially in illustration because you have to somehow include people of different denominations and genders or else people won't identify with it.

I'll experiment with a few ideas when I get a chance...

Exactly... so how can that be well-illustrated on a banner?

I like Nick's idea. What should the kids be doing that represents sarah's summary (or whatever other ideas are important to show)?

I think the banner should be pretty big, but it should be small enough that it can be used in situations where we don't have an entire full-size table.

yeah, now that you put it that way, i think that using a lot of stencils would be really cool. It occurred to me that we could re-use the stencils on a wall as the basis of a mural or something...

you might be right in terms of the colors, though i def. dont like any combinations or red and green, and i also think bright red might look good. and i also have a weakness for bright-ass no. 2 pencil yellow. other than that, toned down sounds good. yeah, everything is usually b+w with misled youth.

Depicting people is intimidating, especially when the have to represent something more than just themselves...

more banner stuff

ok ceecee wrote me with this message about the banner and i said i'd post it here

she wrote

"...As far as the size of the banner we should probably keep in neutral at like six feet by two feet, cause a bigger table will still look ok with that and we can always get some other kind of table cloth to hang behind it if it looks stupid. We can probably put a string thought the top of it so it could be hung across the table or above a booth. (please excuse if none of this makes sense I've been working all night and I can barely keep the thoughts in my head) I don't know much about images of misled youth. But I think we should probably stencil in lettering, in my experience when I paint on letters they end up looking ridiculous, I think people should start designing images and bring them to meetings (both regular and mobile art squad) and we can work on consolidating them.
Silk screening it might be cool but I think it'd be a lot more real and fun if we like all got together to paint a banner saying who we are and what we want!"

i responded saying

"i think yr right about the size of the banner and using the string (or velcro like Gabe suggested) and also the fact that painting the banner together would be more fun. Also, yeah, we should start designing this soon and not just wait until meetings...we
can post images on the forums too, so we can share them like that. I can copy yr message onto the forums so everybody can respond to it."

and i have some other thoughts too

we should brainstorm more about how the banner should look at the next meeting. once we have a basic ideas we should do some sketching and planning individually. Then we spend some time consolidating like cc said. One good thing about using a nice simple size like 6x2 feet is that then we could easily use a grid to mark up our design.

also i think we'll get this banner done way more efficiently if we have people choose s specific role in helping to get it done. I know i want to help design and paint it, and i can also help coordinate us working on it.
