Hey everybody, not that we need anymore projects, b/c we already have our hands full, but i had an idea. Its an idea i have had for some time, but never had the motivation to do. I wanted to create my own wear, like backpacks shoes etc. ive always thought it would be really cool and rewarding to be able to make something that is wearable. I first got the idea when i started hiking and thought it woulkd be fun to make a light weight durable backpack. i never actually did it but i thought maybe some other people would be interested. tell me what you think

smash fashion!

hey there
i know nick tried to make a backpack one time, he can speak to that. I wanna make a cool utility belt with interchangeable pockets and straps and stuff. A sewing project we should do that's not wearable is making an album for all the patches we make. I'm thinking like a big cloth binder with cloth "pages" to pin sample patches in. And it should zip shut too.

i wonder if the make sewing patterns for accessories like bags and shoes. Shoes sound hard. i think you need one of those wooden forms to put the material on.

I'm also into making my clothes adjustable. Like i'm gonna cut the sleeves off a long sleeve shirt for the summer, and add them back in the winter. I'm also interested in using embroidery and appliqué on clothes to make bold shapes and stuff. I've been doing art modelling to make $ for a little while, but i haven't done the costumed stuff (which pays more) cause i don't have a lot of outfits. I want to make some outfits for that. some biker / punk / harlequin / burlesque thing...i want one with all black and white...there's this thing called swap-o-rama-rama (http://www.swaporamarama.org/) that've never been to where you bring $10 and a bag of old clothes, and they put all the clothes in a big pile, poeple grab things and make alterations using the sewing machines and supplies they provide. I just checked and they had one today! oh well. next time...

I searched google for how to

I searched google for how to make a backpack, and two promising results where backpacking.net/makegear/jeff-pack/index.html and backpacking.net/makegear/pack-steury/index.html

I'd be interested in making a backpack if it was really study and comfortable. Maybe some clothes, too.

Makin' cool stuff!

Making clothes is super, super fun! most little fabric stores have a GIANT bucket filled with half used patterns, Usually the ones with three outfits/bags/hats/whatever, out of which only one item has been made, for like 50 cents or cheaper. Not to mention any old clothes/shoes/bags that you hate, could be taken apart and used as models for making other better versions, that look a whole lot cooler anyway. I know how to make hoodies, which would be kind of a fun thing to do. we could get a bunch of travel sized sewing kits, plus real cloth scissors and real tough needles. Also, even though it's sort of grandmothery, I think it'd be kind of cool to make a misled youth quilt and sell it. I just think that we can make a lot of cool squares, with silk screening, stenciling, patches, painting and sewing. Though it has potential to go very wrong, very fast. I dunno, just a thought as far as making money and being artsy.

ooh pretty clothes

that's true about using old clothes as patterns for new ones. And i'm really interested in making hoodies. otherwise, where am i gonna put all these patches? attaching the sleeves and hood sounds tricky, do you use a pattern?

we should definitely get sewing supplies for anyone who wants them. nick found an old sewing machine at his job, so now we have 2. The quilt sounds fun, though i think it might be hard to sell. we'd wanna sell it for a lot cause we'd put so much into it. it could be used as a banner though...

damn, we're gonna look good...

quilt/banner?

that'd acually be really cool. like quilting the banner so it's all different patches. There could be a big central misled youth thing and then little squares all around it. Then people could use all different images and techniques. we'd just need to pick a color scheme, and a theme, which we kinda have anyway.

the hardest part with hoodie is a zipper and the hood is a square which you sew on the neck and then sew the hood closed, same with the sleeves. hmm that doesn't sound too clear, I can show you though. I haven't used a pattern before, but I bet we could find one no problem.

stitches

yeah i like this idea cause it kinda represents the patchwork nature of Misled Youth just being made up of all the people who get involved, making it up as they go along. a work of art like this could take all summer, which is fine, but we probably need a more simple banner before then. the artistic banner could evolve slowly over time. If we can hang it on a wall as opposed to a table, it doesn't even have to conform to a square to rectangular shape -- it can just spread out in all directions, and when new people come in they can add new pieces. If we ever do an art show or anything we could show it there, or just bring it to different events that we do. I think we can just decide on the central image and create it together, then for all the other pieces, people can just go off on a tangent...

Man, i'm such a moron, last night i sewed the yell patch to the back of a thin long sleeve shirt i have, this morning i tried putting it on and it was just all fucked up and crooked...shoulda been more careful. I need to make a hoodie to show off these patches cause the one i have is so heavy duty i can only wear it in the winter. If i make my own i can customize it and do different color panels and stuff. Where do you find that kinda stretchy terrycloth-like hoodie material? It's not like regular fabric.

I think the quilt is a great idea. and did i mention how good we're gonna look?
