Welcome to the language learning group. We probably won't really meet up in person until the summer (or closer to it), but we can do some things online in the meantime.

Where is everyone at in terms of learning Spanish?

In my case, I've studied a little bit using Rosetta Stone (www.rosettastone.com -- you can do some lessons for free on their online demo), and I've had some help from my roommates, but that was mostly a while back. I also got a book, which I haven't really studied yet. I can understand a very little bit of spoken conversation, but I have a long ways to go. I'd really like to get at least to the point where I can get by understanding and speaking in everyday situations entirely in Spanish.

I need to figure out how this learning goal fits into my overall schedule, including other things I want to learn and my job and so on. I tend to get interested in learning or doing things, but then fail to keep up with them to the extent required to make sustained progress. So, maybe I could plan to devote a certain number of hours per week to Spanish. I'll think about it and post my learning plan to the group.

Also, what languages other than Spanish does everyone know or want to learn? (There's English, but that's more a topic for the writing group.) I can read some German, and understand a little bit spoken. I've spent a tiny bit of time on languages like French, Romanian, and Italian. I'm interested in learning the basics of a lot of different languages, but that'll take a while. Smiling

lexical similarity

French and Spanish are both romance (Latin-derived) languages, so there's quite a bit of overlap in overall vocabulary. According to http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=spa, there's 75% "lexical similarity" with French.

Although I've heard it's too confusing to learn several languages at once, I think it would be a good way for me to learn. I haven't really tried it out yet, but I think I will.

rosetta stone, novels, articles, songs

The Rosetta Stone software has a free demo with selected lessons from a bunch of languages available: http://www.rosettastone.com/en/individuals/full-online-demo

It has different modes, but in the basic one you see four photos, and the software displays and plays some word or phrase, and you have to pick one of the photos that it matches. At first it can be hard to guess, but you can keep trying and eventually figure it out.

I have a few novels for young readers in Spanish, French, and German. I learned most of the German I know with Rosetta Stone and by reading novels and looking up words (at first it was almost every word) in the dictionary. If anyone wants to borrow some that's cool. The same process of reading and looking up words can be done with web pages, news articles, etc. For example, http://news.google.com has news in a bunch of languages.

Also, there are a lot of resources on http://spanish.about.com/ and http://french.about.com/ and http://german.about.com/

Listening to songs in the language one is learning, and looking up and translating the lyrics, is also helpful.

I completed french in school

I completed french in school so I am pretty good with french. I still have a lot of notes and stuff and I could probably teach it, although my accent is a disaster. I used to speak basically fluent spanish but I lost all my grammar when i switched to taking french.
