I'm interested in studying some aspects of art in a more disciplined way than i usually get a chance to, and i think having other people studying the same things would help me stay focused. Some topics i want to work on soon are human anatomy, general drawing and observations skills, professional painting techniques, and understanding perspective. I have a few good books that relate to these topics:

Keys to Drawing -- has a bunch of exercises that help you with drawing techniques and observation

Some anatomy books by Andrew Loomis - these classic books are out of print but you can download them as e-books. They look really helpful and teach you a lot of tricks for remembering proportions and stuff

Modelling the Figure in Clay -- This book shows you step by step how to build up a figure in clay from the skeleton to the muscles and skin. I started following it but never got bask a few bones. It's a great way to understand anatomy in depth.

The Artist's Guide to Sketching is all about drawing in different places and capturing what you see in a sketchbook

There's also the Natual Way to draw by Kimon Nicolaides which is a super rigerous program that takes a year to complete.

so who would be interested in studying some art stuff? I would like to kow about other books and resources as well. We could set goals for ourselves and check in every week, and also post sketches and things online.

Human anatomy

in two weeks is that party at the society of illustrators, so we could organize a bunch of us to go sketching there for that thursday.

rattle me bones

that drawing session sounds fun, though i checked and $20 is kinda a lot! Maybe it could be a future job opportunity for me though...

i found links for downloading the Andrew Loomis anatomy books as e books. He's supposed to be really good for illustrators and comic book artists. these are the links:

Andrew Loomis - Eye of The Painter - 25MBs (http://rapidshare.de/files/1617611/Andrew_Loomis_-_Eye_Of_The_Painter.pdf.zip.html)

Andrew Loomis - Fun with a Pencil - 11MBs (http://rapidshare.de/files/1617664/Andrew_Loomis_-_Fun_WIth_a_Pencil.pdf.zip.html)

Andrew Loomis - Succesful Drawing 22MBs (http://rapidshare.de/files/1617739/Andrew_Loomis_-_Successful_Drawing.pdf.zip.html)

Note: Scroll down to the bottom and click Free. Wait the allotted time and there you go! It's not perfect but it might help.

Also this anatomy book is really handy:

http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Human-Anatomy-Artist-Galaxy/dp/0195030958

and this guy George Bridgeman is supposed to be a great anatomy teacher.

I think we should take a book like Keys to Drawing and just get started. i can make copies of each chapter and bring them to meetings, or type up not all the text but only the exercise instructions online for everyone to see.

Also i forgot we had all those printmaking books and i know i'll be making an effort to study up on them in the next few weeks as much as possible to prepare for the PIY workshop. I also want to do more printmaking techniques not only for making patches and whatever but also for more expressive projects. I like the balance between the hand-done one of a kind quality and the ability to mass produce something.

keys to drawing

I think using the excercises in keys to drawing together and apart is a good idea. We can meet and do some together, and then go home and do some on our own and share em and talk about them. I think drawing is a lot like writing and critiques are very important, plus seeing other people's work helps you see ways to improve your own. Anyway the society of illustrators only cost me ten dollars when I go, maybe they upped the price?

...hope that made sense. I'm dying my hair and talking on the phone too. it's a little crazy.

starting

ok, i'm gonna bring copies of chapter 1 of keys to drawing to thursday's mtg -- remember we said we'd get started a little early for those who wanna do the art study. I guess me and gabe already have the book so i'll just bring copies for you and ingrid. And yeah, sharing and getting feedback is very important. Actually in the past i've kept an art journal to anaylze my progress, i think that would be a helpful thing to do.
