The only way ive been able to leave comments is editing, but i wil get FireFox! Anyways all of the ideas are goode, seperate parties etc. i think by doing a suggested donnation we will get more kids and it will give people a chance to get to know misled youth without feeling like we are taking their money. It would be overall friendly we would be making some money and it could be a good time. The next party we will get down to the serious stuff.
Also, this new space, im super happy we found it and it sounds amazing, do you know if its called "The Coz" i went to go see a show there and the space is fucking brilliant. Well this party is going to be killa. Peace and love

great idea

it's funny that we thought of an end of summer thing but not of a beginning of summer party. It's kinda like, "ok, school's out, now let's see the real thing..." And it would be a good way to get more kids involved in all the summer activities we want to do. With the DIY workshop, what were you thinking of? Would the workshop, art projects, and party all take place on the same day or on different days? And where could these things take place? We could have a small party at our place in SI, but maybe we should look into something else? If we get space donated, these activities would hardly cost any $ yet could really fund raise a lot.

let's do it

welcome summer party

So as i said before, a party/event for welcoming summer. I think we could make it happen. I was thinking the workshop and party could be on the same day, an ULTIMATE DAY! Anyway, it sounds like a good idea that we can put into action. i know we have alot on our plate as it is, yet maybe we could start looking into it now. We need a space and people and more solid idea. i tried to look up complacent online yet didnt find anything, but if anyone knows how to contact them that might be a first step. ide be willing to bottom line this project, but it wont happen without all of our help and connections. summer is close and we need to make some money. i think it would also be helpful if we had some solid plans before the Youth Super Alliance Meeting, so we can sound grounded. Tell me your thoughts please. Mucho Love

party

it seems complacent changed their name to The Danger, and right now their site only has a form to joing an email list. I found this web page that can give you an idea of the kidn of parties they do: http://complacent.org/nation/

But i have some phone numbers and email addresses for them. however, it would probably cost $ to work w/them cause they usually have to pay a lot of rent for their spaces.

we should definately put this idea on the agenda for this week's meeting. I have quite a few contacts that cold be good for this event: orgs that can do good workshops, bands, poets, my friend who spins fire, etc.

what kinds of workshops are you thinking of? this might be ahrd to pull off, but i think some really hands-on activities would be appropriate for this kind of event. I'm thinking of doing like a "barnraising" kind of thing where a bunch of people get together and create a bunch if stuff on the spot that could be a part of the party at night. At the same time, i know it's hard to accomplish a creative project with such time constraints. we'd have to find the right balance of the projects being fairly quick and fool-proof, yet not seeming to cookie cutter or rushed. Also doing the big messy project would probably rule out anyone's house as a space for the event...i dunno, let's keep brainstorming...

Party

Hm, maybe we could have it somewhere were we wouldn't have to pay to go? like a beach, a friends house, a park, our own houses. cause if we're gonna have a project that's gonna cost money too. How large scale are we thinking? we'd have to think about admissions price and how much money we're willing to put into this thing. It could be really fun if it was expensive, and it could be really fun if it was cheap, we should talk about it at a meeting.

money changes everything...

there's a relationship between spending money and making money. we could put together an almost-free party at a park, for instance, and break even just selling a couple of zines and patches. if we spent a bunch of money on alcohol though we'd probably make the money back, plus more. spending money on an event would probably make it less fun for the organizers because we'd be stressed out trying to make it back, but it would pay off for other projects.

any event in a beach or a park would have to be pretty alcohol free. if anyone has a friend with a big enough house for a dance floor (that's convenient to get to), that would be the best thing. we probably shouldn't pay complacent (or "the danger") for their space, because misled youth doesn't have enough money to gamble with right now. we should do small - medium sized events first. sometimes you can make more money with a few people and some cases of beer than a ton of people with no beer.

I say we do a bunch of events, and each event has a different approach depending on the purpose (money, promotion, space, booze, etc). but I wouldn't bother with anything too huge for a while -- it drains resources.

I made a private group called "the event collective". If you're reading this now, you're a part of it. I just don't want anyone to find this on google typing "free booze party for kids." so far 16 unique users have found our site by typing "fuck crusties" into google.

yeah, let's do something

Basically the bigger and/or more public the event, the more it has to have a strict no alcohol policy (at least for under 21), or we risk running into major legal problems.

I think a welcome summer party sounds great, but maybe we could have something pretty small and not really publicized. Actually even that could raise some funds. Our friend Xochitl had a benefit brunch in an apartment with maybe 20 friends and a $10 suggested donation and she made almost $300. She also had a benefit dance party (with alcohol sold) in another apartment with mostly people she or her friends knew that raised over $1000 between the alc and the door.

Let's welcome the summer!

I think this is a great idea! I'm really thinking hard to find a place to do this, how about st. marks church? They have a big hall that can easily be turned into a dance floor, I know a few people who got the space before. I'm not sure if it costs money or if we're allowed to have booze (if we intend to do that) but it is a good space.

more ideas

ok so i have a few new thoughts about the party:

1) maybe we could do it at the time's up! space on houston street (it's a cool bike space where they also have a lot of parties). I know some people there and will talk to them this week. there are a bunch of pro's and a few cons to this space. What's great about it is the location and the general fun and politically aware vibe there. The only real drawback is that we would have to have a stricter alcohol policy than a house party. This is mostly due to the fact that the cops sometimes harass the space. I would have to talk with someone there to find out exactly what the limits are. Also they might not charge us $, but there probably would be some kind of compensation expected, like volunteering for them. That could be a good thing though, they definately deserve the support.

2) my other thought is in regards to how to incorporate something beyond just a regular dance party into this event. I know gabe brough up the idea of a workshop or art projects with the idea of showing the educational side of misled youth to the people who come out. We've been having a hard time envisioning what those activities could be and how they could mesh with a dance party. I have a feeling that if we scheduled something more "serious" earlier in the day, it would have a low turn out and most poeple would only go to the party. I could be wrong, it's just a hunch. But i think that it may be easier and more feasible to try to incorporate the messages of misled youth into the party itself. there are a lot of ways of doing this, like giving out flyers and selling merch with our art and messages on it, talking to the crowd between songs, hanging up art and banners on the walls, etc. What do you all think?

Times up sounds like it

Times up sounds like it could be a good space. Definitely we should incorporate Misled Youth into the party itself.

I think that any time a workshop is combined with a party or show -- before or after -- there will be a lower turnout at the workshop than the party or show. But we could still have it. Or, at least, we could schedule a workshop or discussion for the following week and promote it heavily at the party.

If Times Up will work, I say we do it. Then potentially do some other, smaller party in someone's apartment.

good news!

guess what guys --

so thursday evening we fund out times up doesn't do parties anymore and that was disappointing. that night i got a message from this girl Sarah who i got in touch with a week ago, saying we could do the party at her place in bklyn. yesterday i was able to speak to her more and it sounds really good. They have a big loft space in bushwick and they've had successful parties and shows there before. And she even said that they're haing a shows thre next week -- they want it to be a benefit, but for who? Ummm, us?!It sounds like we might get two benefits in one! Ok i get nervous whenever anything sounds too good, but i think doing the party at this house sounds pretty fool proof -- no fees to pay, no rules and regulations, their neighbors are used to the noise...I will let everyone know more info as i get it. thoughts?

Sounds excellent! That solves a lot of the problems of bigger locations. Do you know what time their party/show is next week?

seperate parties??

alright, now that this forum's private (gee, I hope people are logging in to read it...), I can raise the point about alcohol. I keep proposing two kinds of parties - one fun, all ages, and cheap as hell. the other should be for adults, expensive, and stressful. I think it's important to abstain from profiting off of kids who don't have much money, charging them $3 for a ¢50 beer, etc. even if cops aren't a problem, misled youth isn't really about that. I say we welcome the summer, promote misled youth to new kids, have fun and break even. people can either bring their own booze or we can sell it for the same price as we pay for it when we get it. admission can be between free and $5.

then we have a party with some members organizations we're friends with that's directed toward making money for the space. part of my reasoning for this is there are some organizations (like youth venture) that are cool, but we sorta need to impress to get more help from.

I think Misled Youth can provide both, but not at once. what do you think?

good idea

yeah this upcoming party can definately be the easy fun one. For the fancy party i think we should wait until we've had a few meetings with the space-getting coalition and really establish our idea and create a buzz about it.

i just found out the benefit show is this friday, the same day as the conference, so we really cant go. but they said they'd give us all the $$ from the door. pretty cool, huh? Sarah (the girl from the house) is gonna try and come through to this thursday's meeting and check us out. I'm gonna give her some flyers to hand out at the show.

so far so good.

Can't we go to the party after the conference? It'll probably still be going after the conference ends.

2 parties

Yeah, I agree with having several parties with different purposes. The upcoming parties in this apartment sort of avoid the question of us dealing with alcohol, but I think if we personally plan have an all ages party that's not about making a bunch of money, we shouldn't supply the alcohol (at least with an actual bar.) People can bring their own, and maybe we could have some around for friends at cost.

Have we decided when the next party is and is it only going to be a dance party or will we incorporate the workshop idea in there too? I'm really excited, tell us about the party last friday!

Now that we have a place to have this party which i am so happy about its time to think of an exact date and then how we are goin to promote it. i think we can promote however we like mostly because were in a space that we wont have to worry too much about underage drinking, making noise, and the fucking pigs. This party is goin to be wonderful and great as long as everyone knows Misled Youth is throwing it and what we stand for. Im excited, youre excited, everyone is fucking excited! Also... i was reading the intro forum and we should try and get the kids from out fo town to come. maybe we could have a long weekend where we can all meet and talk? We can all talk thursday. PEACE

party planning

alright, so...dates...i'm thinking a friday or saturday night after the last day of school. The last day is wednesday the 27th, so what about friday the 29th?

another thing we should think about is how this is a benefit for the space, and how that will tie into the space meeting and any other work we do around that issue. I think that once we have clarified some things in the space meeting, we should put those ideas on a cool little flyer so that the people who come to the party know what it's a benefit for. So I guess it's misled youth's party, but as part of the youth space coalition.

a weekend thing could be cool, it would be great if some out of town kids came. I think one activity that appropriate would be just getting together and talking about what we want to do together this summer. Maybe we could have a big piece of paper up at the party where kids can write ideas for things they want to do. Then we get together the next day (not too early in the morning) and discuss those things more in depth. what do you think?

space details

oh, i forgot to tell you all what the space is like. we went to the benefit show on friday after the conference, they hand some bands playing in the living room. it's really nice -- spacious with nice wood floors and exposed bricks, plus they have a little fire escape/rooftop area in the back which is perfect for parties. i would say there were around 30 people there and it wasn't all that crowded. also they said sound equipment is not an issue, they can get it anytime. and it's right on broadway in bklyn, like two blocks from the j train. so it's pretty perfect.

party flyer design

ok, so we need to make a flyer to promote this party! any ideas? what mediums should we use? it needs to look good in black and white. we should write up some text for the flyer. I'll try to think of something that sounds good. the theme is school's out -- summer's in, let's get together and do cool shit. I think there should be text on the back about what misled youth is and about the space we're fundraising for.

I think a simple black and white flyer sounds great, something we can photocopy. Text on the back would alos be great, we want people know about misled youth, instead of just thinking they get to go to some crazy party. We have to be known. I dont know what we should put on the front maybe like MISLED PARTY then alll the info etc. any cool ideas would work as long as its clear and direct, nothing super complicated. but we should get these done soon, before school is over so we can actually hand them out etc...

Text on the flyer

I think it should all be on the front, If there's writing on the back we can't stick it up anywhere, and that's no fun. we can talk to everyone at the party about what misled youth is and why we're fundraising before the party is like a real party.
We could have a small graphic and put the text on the front or we could put a small general thing about it and explain it more at the party, I just think it'd be fun to tape them around our schools and stuff.

flyer ideas

i had the idea of an image of a kid jumping in the air to show the "school's out" idea. We could take photos of each other jumping to get references. And if we don't wanna show a specific person, we could just make it a silhouette like i did with the poster.I was thinking the text could be hand written in a way that kind of fits around the figure. Also it would be good to include our arrow logo on the flyer.

with the text, whether it's 2 sided or not, i think it would be good to have a little info about misled youth and the space we want to create. And if it's 2 sided, all you have to do is tape two next to each other to show front and back.

Speaking of parties!

mine is on the 22nd!

I think it might be nice though to talk about ourselves when the party is starting so people will be all intrigued and maybe not wanna just get wasted completely. maybe we shouldn't give ourselves away completely, but there was this flyer at my work (that i should've grabbed) that had text and graphic kind of interwoven in a way and it was really, really full of info but it was very tiny, like half the size of ours even, so we could just cram it all in too.

general flyer text

here's something that's generally about misled youth and the space idea. we still need to refine the party text. CC i'll def be at yr b-day and yr right about talking about misled youth at the party. Also we should included the info about the sunday bbq thing on the flyer, we can announce that too.

and with the flyer art, it would be cool to find a way to design it collaboratively. I am down to help. If we have the text all written up and the graphic figured out, we can just break down into tasks and then put it all together. we can set up a time to get together and do that. Also we can post images on the forums, i can show anyone who doesn't know how.

anyway here is the text:

============================================

Misled Youth is a youth-led project based in NYC. We meet weekly and do things like presenting hands-on workshops, organizing events, and self-educating through activities like printmaking, reading groups, learning languages together, and more. Our latest project is starting a coalition of other organizations with the goal of creating a by-youth-for-youth community space.

As young people in NYC, we feel that we need a common space to gather. And we’re not talking about spaces like schools where we are under control, clubs that we’re excluded from, or malls where there is nothing to do but buy. We’re talking about a community space run by and for young people. Here are our ideas for what it can include:

· open space for shows and events
· art studio, gallery and print shop
· music recording and practice studio
· spaces for meetings and classes
· after school programs
· a 24 hour safe space/drop-in/shelter for at-risk youth
· a small garden or greenhouse
· a computer lab
· a bookstore, cafe, record store, or distro
· murals
· a library
· a kitchen
· a bike repair area
· a wood shop

Our strategy is for a bunch of small organizations to get together and raise money so we can get a space like this that we can all share. The organizations can work with youth to run a variety of projects out of the building. But first we need to raise tons of money! We plan to have lots of fundraisers to help us achieve this goal. Our first one is a school’s out! dance party on Friday, June 29th. We’ll also be having a lot of meetings to strategize and get input from other people and organizations. Our first official meeting is on Saturday, June 16th. Please check out site and contact us if you’re interested:

ok so i got in touch with two cool local bands, it sounds like both of them are down to play at the party. They are

Terror Eyes(members are kids who were involved in misled youth last year)

and

Cedric Obando and the Broken Condoms(they played at the livewire festival)

These two bands sound really good, and i think having them play would be cool. My friend is actually currently working on a poster for them actually. If they are down to play and we are down to have them i would say lets go for it, just keeping in mind its still a dance party and not just a show. But i like what i heard.

those pics are all great. and the preliminary sketching looks promising. the lettering...what about this font that nick and sarah designed, or like tweaked? that was really cool. maybe we could use everyone's poses and have different versions of the flyers. one person, but different on different flyers.

actually the font would be good for like the the back text. i'd like to see what cool things gabe can do with the front:D

ok, so it sounds like ppl are saying we should do different versions. nick said he wanted to do a pen and ink version of the photo of him. so should we all just choose photos we like and do flyers based off them? i guess i could keep working on the pic of gabe i started with, or maybe try using the one of myself. we can all do them in different styles and whatever, as long as they're all half-sized and all have the same info. more info for the flyer

i forgot to include the info about the summer bbq. how's this:

…after you’ve danced away every last but of school stress, you’re invited to Misled Youth’s Summer Visioning BBQ! Come hang out and eat grilled treats while we discuss all of the exciting projects we can do now that school’s out!

Sunday, July 1st at 2pm
Dias y Flores Community Garden
13th Street bet Ave A and B

also, nick had this great idea that everyone should save their old notes, homework, and tests so we can tear them up and use them in the pinata like confetti!

i'm gonna work on the designs more tonight. hopefully others are working on some too.

i was suggesting multiple designs because there are multiple cool photos to choose from, and also there are several of us who have our own artistic ideas about how the flyer should look. So if you have an idea, definately go for it. I will be doing something and nick might be too. With the back, we can use the same design on all the flyers if people want.

Do you use any kind image programs like photoshop? Cause everything i have will be a digital file, so yeah, i can print it. I can also make yr artwork into a file if you need that. So either you can give me a hard copy in person or email me a jpg of it.

anyway,i'm excited about coming up with creative designs for this. With the food, that's great news. Thanks a lot for hooking that up.

and to system reject, i hope to meet you too. maybe we'll be doing some end of summer event by then. i hope these forums can still be a good place for you to post and express ideas even though we're so far away physically.

All he food is really good baked good, all organic, lots of vegan stuff, lots of gluten free stuff. Its all tasty yummy. we could sell it. AIGHT.

Sounds Amazing.

This day will be dooope. I really like COBC and I am really excited that theyre performing at our dance party. I was wondering who has copies of the flyers? I've been telling people about it but I want to begin handing them out. Also, an electronic copy would be very useful.

Also, can we make a list of things to do the day of the dance party. Do we need to be there for set-up (distro table, food, drinks), do we need to buy a few things? (paper plates, cups, utensils?) What about the PA system?

I also wanted to make peace for being out of the loop lately, especially for the in person meetings. But I have been reading the notes and now I am psyched and ready to give extra time on this.

hey guys

wow, for some reason i got really wired last night and didn't sleep at all. i was running around doing a bunch of shit and finally crashed at like 6pm tonight and slept for 3 hrs. but that means i'll be able to get up early tomorrow. this cough i have is pretty fucked up. i'm gonna go to the doctor.

anyway, i have a pretty complete pencil sketch of the flyer and am gonna try really hard to ink it and have it done by tommorow so i have have copies for everybody this thursday. i'll send out a digital version too. i think you all are gonna like it. Also, we only have 3 days left before the space mtg on saturday! i'm nervous about it. i will keep you all updated on everything as far as who says there gonna come and stuff. It definately needs to be the focus of this week's meeting.
and yeah, leanne, we really need to be planning for the party and bbq more. The people from the house said sound equipment is no problem for them to get, so that's cool. But the food, drinks, promotion, and decoration are all areas we need to work on. We should def. get there several hours before the party to set up.

ok, i think everything is gonna come together real soon. i think our super powers are gonna kick in at the last minute and save us from cetain destruction...

gotta get some sleep!!
