If you have a chance to come into the city im sure everyone would love to get together and meet you. I would love to meet someone from out of town, with the new space and the learning groups getting off the ground im sure there will be stuff to do, maybe there will be some kind of event we put together or some other group in the city will be having that you could come too. I wold be more than happy to show you around, maybe we all could go on some kind of an adventure, sarah and nick know of this somewhat secret beach with all sorts of sweet shit on it. maybe we could do that, i still havent been and i really want to. Also in july and i think in august we want to do merch at some of the Tompkins shows, chocking victim and leftover crack play them, i think Rabia too. I hope we all get a chance to meet. Sarah and nick would prob let you stay at their place, my house would probably work too. Hope to see you! peace
holy shit, youre having a choking victim show? id kill to see them. as far as places to stay dont worry about that. im just going to be in town for like 2 days before and after my family goes up to nantuckett for vacation and we're staying with my aunt and uncle. a lot of this visit is also just so my mom (whos coming with me to meet you guys) can see whats going on up there and make sure its cool that i move up there after high school. so i wouldnt plan anything that big, maybe just get some lunch and check out the place. whatever you guys think would give my mom the best impression haha.
well, we arnt having the show, but every year at Tompkin Square Park they have free shows, and choking victim tends to always play. I think the date is july 22, siren fest is on the 21 at Coney Island. How do you plan to get to nyc and how long you stayin?
every summer my family flies to newark NJ to meet my aunt and uncle. we drive from there to nantuckett and then back to fly home from newark. we take the train into the city when we have some extra days and i think my mom said that'll be july 26th or august 13th. just enough for me to meet you guys and check out the space pretty much. i wish i could stay longer but i start school not long after we get back and i have some summer projects to finish up.
ok so its definite. i will be in the city next thursday, the 26th. so i guess whoever wants to get together we can meet at the space. i also just found out that my entire family is coming with me, not just my mom. hooray (that was sarcasm by the way)
it's cool that someone from out of town will be able to connect in person. though the factors in this one require a more thoughtful approach maybe.
a little background on your fam and who all will be there. are they expecting/looking for something in particular? what have you been expecting/imagining? would this be like "show and tell?" is it just that you guys will be in the city that day and they wanna make sure you're okay? (after all, you are from out of town and under 18) currently, our group consists of 12 people: three 16, one 17, four 18, one 20, 21, 26, and 27.
the space is still pretty raw/empty. we haven't started workdays yet. and as far as something to do, did you have any ideas? we haven't really scoped the neighborhood for places to eat, other than pizza shops for a slice or bodega deli's.
also, thursdays happen to be our meeting day. we usually have them at a community garden on the lower east side of manhattan. i thought you guys might just join us there, but then that also raises thoughts. there may not be enough seating, we may have to censor ourselves, how would they interact during the meeting? actually maybe we could meet there just before the meeting, they could meet people, then go sit/hang out in the front garden area, enjoy the scenery, go for a walk down the block 14th street is right there, thompkins square park is close by. it really is a great area, lots of stuff for you and the fam to do.
let's coordinate this.

I just talked with my mom about it and she said she would rather meet with just the core members than all 12 members, so i guess that would be sarah, nick, and brendan? she for sure wants to check out the space. what time is the meeting? i might be able to make it to that and i might not, i would prefer not to involve my parents in that if i could just for the sake of awkwardness haha.
there are still many unanswered questions. also, we don't really think in terms of "core" members and are non-hierarchical, but yes, there are four people who actively do MYN organizing/visioning on a daily basis. the two founders nick and sarah, myself (a collaborator since before day one), and brendan, someone deeply involved since the early manifestations of this project.
our meetings are from 4:30 to 6:30

ok my mom wants to meet earlier than that so i probably wont come to the meeting. we get in town on wednesday, can i get one of your phone numbers so i can call to make sure everything is cool before hand?
Sorry, I posted suggesting we chat on the site but the chat seemed to be down.
Anyway, we are probably going to be busy until the afternoon, and we probably won't have time to go to the space that day. How early do you want to meet? What would be best for us is in the community garden in Manhattan where we have our meetings, in the afternoon before the meeting.
(You can basically see the space on the web site, and it's basically going to be a silk screening space, not our headquarters or anything like that. And we have nothing there now...)
We're still kind of wondering about what Michael asked, too.
Anyway I hope we can meet up, let us know more about your exact schedule and if you could meet us Thursday afternoon in Manhattan.
We can talk on the phone, too.

as far as backround on my family goes, my moms a nurse and shes miss organized. shes trying to make sure i have "a plan" for my future. my dads a computer guy so he has a kinda weird sense of humor, but he gets kinda paranoid about all these things that could go wrong with my life and all the things im "not thinking about". both of them are still clinging to the fact that i might at the last minute change my mind and decide to go to college. my brothers a sophmore at UGA and hes pretty cool. hes the one who got me into punk in the first place, but hes become a frat boy in college and im not sure how i feel about that.
the point of this visit is mostly to show my parents that everything will be ok when i move up there (ill be 18 by then) and so they can get more of a sense of what kind of stuff the group does. ive shown them the site and everything, but my mom still has questions for some of you im sure. theyre definitely going to have questions about where im gonna be living. i told them theres a slight possibility of me living in the space and if not, i could just find a cheap loft somewhere. meeting in the gardens in the afternoon would be ok, im pretty lax as far as scheduling stuff goes, but like i said, my mom always has to be organized.
that sounds ok. with the space, I wouldn't bank on that as a place to show your mom your living situation. it's not much right now (you can see the pictures), it's in a kinda run-down area that I could easily see an overprotective parent being worried about the safety of, and there's almost definitely not going to be a bedroom, it would just be a small loft space where someone might be able to crash, but it's not the kinda thing you'd show to your mom as your alternative to a college dorm.
anyway, if you seriously plan on moving up here, you'd need some money saved up to hold you over til you get a job (which might be difficult if you don't have much work experience). having the small community of friends that you've made thru this website might help a little with stuff like jobs and housing, but having some backup money would definitely help your mom feel better about your decision.
It's possible that me and brendan will be at work on thursday, I'm not 100% sure though. Hopefully everyone else will make it though.

ive had a job for about 2 years here so ive got some money saved up. (although lately half my paychecks have been going to my probation officer for that speeding ticket i got a while ago)
id like to meet as many of you guys as i can, i just dont want you guys to plan anything big just for me. like i said, just a meeting in the park or something will be just fine.
that's longer than I've been able to hold a job. what do you do?
anyway, I think me and brendan are going be working, but it sounds like other people can make it... I consider most of the kids involved to be core members
damn, I thought a speeding ticket was just a small fine or points on your license or something - I didn't know you get probation or anything.
i could possibly see you on thursday after 530 with everyone. what did you have in mind. would your mom come downtown to see us all or what? Cece talked with me a little about everyting that was going on with you coming. a pot luck was mentioned. i might not be a "core member" but im certainly a dedicated one and ive been involved for most of the recent events like the activist conference, party and space so i would like to meet you a lot and i guess meeting your mom would be cool too. hope to see you.
