Ok, so far there's a bunch of proposals for how this space should physically be laid out. Make your own - you don't need Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD, just a sheet of graph paper, a pen and a scanner.

here's the first one:

first plan

here's the second one:

here's the third one:

third plan

None of these have really clearly laid out storefronts - it's mostly from a Misled Youth perspective. The third one is the least obstructive to the rest of the space, but it requires moving the stove (not so hard since it's electric I think), knocking out the stupid protruding wall behind the stove, extending the counter, and building a detachable wall. It also takes away two feet of our counter space, since we'd be turning the darkroom so people could walk by. Having a rectangular table helps a lot, the second two plans have that and a smaller dark room area (which is the smallest we can make it), which allows the art space to start where the stairs start.

Here's a printable version of the current layout: original_space_blueprint.pdf Download it, print it, draw on it and post what you come up with here.

looking

at this with fresh eyes. although, at this time of night, i have no idea how. but, i've seen a couple things in the third design. there doesn't seem to be room to get past the stove to the end of the sink/counter. also, i don't know that i've ever seen a fridge and a stove set up right next to each other. there could be something to that. and, there is the question of moving the work table and print station for events. i think it would have to be made in such a way that it could be split in two and rolled away in sections, therefore lighter and more maneuverable, cause we will have to squeeze it somewhere. though if these issues were resolved it would open up more event space for all groups to take advantage of. however, i do like the second one best. it's seems so simple and in this, quite aesthetically pleasing and indeed even more practical in that, how many people do we see drawing in to events? people don't stand in the front room the whole time and watch the show non-stop anyway. people move and mingle. the back areas and the garden could work for this crowd which would allow for more people to be coming and going from the main show area. what kind of set up are we seeing for parties. thadeaus is a dj and does dance parties, and i'm getting ahead of myself here, but maybe we could build a heavy, solid platform, doubling as a door over the stairs to the basement that could be a dj platform, surrounded by the railing.

okay, need sleep...i keep telling myself that, maybe it'll happen.

i agree in that the second

i agree in that the second design looks the best so far. as far as the stuff being in the way for events, arent most of them going to be held in the basement anyway? if we had shows and stuff down there we could just open the cellar door to the street and people could come and go through there.

change happens fast

no events in basement, or, at least very unlikely. the freegan bike workshop just has too much material and stuff going on down there...which is cool, they're paying for it. also, there were just too many questions from all groups about the feel and comfort of it. no windows, small/few exits, low hanging pipes, etc...

so, events will be upstairs, which we're totally cool with, but that raised, for in our hearts, questions about maximizing that space. but, as of yesterday, we've decided that the second layout does indeed work the best for us and feel that the front space is still plenty sufficient for events without compromising our vision of what we wanted the space for/ why we went in on this project in the first place. we will state our position at tonight's meeting on the space with IOH. furthermore, something that i would like to mention tonight, is that we are confident we have "built in" ways of reaching out to especially young people, cause that's what our group does, same with another group that i organize with The Icarus Project (also very close friends of Misled Youth). the nature of our groups is such that people can connect with us directly through what we and they do. therefore, IOH may have concerns/to take into account/act in such a way that we just don't have to worry about.

so, we have our "area" laid out and we know what we're doing and where to start and we want to begin just that. this is what we want/need for the space to be worthwhile to us and we are anxious to begin building and allowing people to connect with our awesome, hands on, important work.

A completely new proposal

It wasn't in the original blueprint because we thought it was sorta useless, but there's a hallway going from the door that leads to the backyard up 20 feet or so to a door that leads to the rest of the building. It's about 46" wide (almost 4'). Some people from in our hearts proposed we put our washout/darkroom in there.

My first reaction was that we were getting disrespected and shoved under the rug. After I found out that it was basically 4 ft wide though I realized it wasn't so bad an idea, because our original darkroom was only 4 ft wide. The advantages of the hallway are:

1. it's completely removed from everything else and therefore doesn't impinge on event space
2. it's closer to the water pipes we need for the washout booth
3. we don't have to build any walls
4. if we agree on this, in our hearts won't block it so we could get started right away

we still get the space next to the bathroom for printing/counter space. In fact, we could probably still use all of that area up to the stairs so long as whatever we have is collapsible, because I don't think anyone will use it anyway most of the time (unless there's an event).

ok

When I first heard about the hallway plan, it seemed impractical, but it seems that it'll be fine. I do think it should be at least somewhat portable... ideally the hallway could be cleared quickly if need be.

So... I guess it's time to look at what exactly we're going to build in these spaces. Nick's getting started on that, and maybe we can have a work day soon.
