Hey everyone, I am leaving on thursday, however ill be back. I know weve said we need to make a ime line for the space and we want it to be up and running by the time school starts, so i think we need to actually make his time line, post it up on the site, invie anyone and everyoe who want to come and work come, and while working, start making the space known about, with flyers, what we got, etc... I also think we should plan a grand opening...a day full of creative learning etc... maybe we could have a small art show, some kind of poetry reading, maybe a workshop, and open screen printing. It could really help us. Also, perhaps we should contact some othr groups about programs or oter things we might be able to help them with. With this space we can help so many people out, spread the word! SO im sorry i havent been around that much, but when school gets in swing, for some sad reason, ill become more available. AH WE HAVE A SPACE... this is still so great, makes me smile everytime i think about it!
PEACE and
LoVe

time line and everything else

hey gabe!
looking forward to you coming back so we can do more great stuff together.

so far i've emailed two big call outs -- one asking for material donations and another for people who want to do different programs and activities in the space. people have responded to both. nick and i have done 5 workdays at the space so far. I think it will be at least a week until we have everything more or less built.

i think one of the next steps is to call a meeting of everyone who wants to be involved in the space starting in september, in order to clarify our plans and support everyone in supporting the space. Maybe we can do that in the third or fourth week of august. Also there is a lot of general work of straightening up the space and making a sign and making flyers and stuff both for misled youth's work in the space and for the space as a whole.

I met with this girl tina today who wants to do a poetry/spoken word workshop at the space starting sept. She is very cool and i think i may be working with her on this. we're looking for others interested in writing and poetry to help out as well.

i also started thinking that in order for this work to be successful, we have to make it easy for (young) people to plug in and get involved. One more formal way of doing this that i think i could set up would be to have students from city-as-school intern at the space. The could help run classes, set up events, paint the mural, and organize stuff. even without having the interns, we just have to have really clearly defined roles and projects in the space so ppl can get involved.

I also think ppl from misled youth need to start thinking long term of what our goals are of the space and everything else we're doing.

Josh MacPhee from justseeds, a really cool radical art distro contacted me interested in the silkscreening, particularly doing posters. i would love to see a collaboration between misled youth and justseeds.

so that's what i've got for now, we definately need to keep up the momentum on this!

with the grand opening -- i think that would be great, we'd definately have to get a lot of work done first, now is the time to start planning!

word

This is all so exciting, the justseeds thing would be absolutely amazing, really interesting, it could be a great workshop and i think a lot of people outside of the misled youth circle would be really interested in it. Also that spoken word thing would be great, but if it is going to be a program, we should set up dates and get people to sign up for it soon, unless we dont want to do it like that, however i think a small fee for the class would be a good idea. Also the intern thing is an amazing idea, I know city-as kids intern at ABC so we could do it too. Along with the mural we could maybe have some kind of workshop/class along with it. We could do it with JustSeeds and talk to Bee Hive collective (i would love to work with them) and maybe visual resistance would like to help too? Also, there is a Ghost Mice show on Sep 1 and i think one on the 2, there a folk band they stand for a lot of good things etc.... I wanted to talk to them about having them or anyone else on the Plan-it X label play at our space.... maybe, maybe not, any ideas regarding that? So all this sounds great! Im leaving tomorrow, ill check the site as much as i can, SEE YALL SOON, btw i have a cell phone now.
PEACE AND LOVE,
Gabe W

this fall

yeah, with the justseeds workshop, josh mentioned a screenprinting 101 class, but something more in depth would be better, since misled youth already knows how to teach basics. it could be about getting certain messages into your art, or about more advanced techniques or something. people who took the workshops would be encouraged to use the studio during open hours to work on their own projects.

i have been all intimidated by the idea of helping to create the poetry/spoken word workshop since i haven't done that stuff in so long. personally, i would be interested in putting together a workshop where we talk about things like what we can express in images and how we can get our message out, cover basic design principals and stuff. we would look at radical art and design for inspiration, and we'd help ppl with whatever they're trying to create. would anybody else be interested in doing something like that? it doesn't necessarily have to happen immediately.

when i told my mom about all these workshops, she said that we should charge at least something. i guess the both of you are right, one thing i didn't even think about was the cost of the materials for all these activities. my mom suggested maybe giving any young kids who come to the workshops notes to show their parents explaining that we need x dollars per class. it could be as little as $1 a class, def. not more than $5, especially if most of the participants are youth. of course, we wouldn't turn anyone down if they were broke.

i will talk to ppl from city as as soon as we have a clear plan for what will be happening this fall in the space.

with the beehive, i'd love to work with them too. however, they're based in maine and only come here when they're on tour, so i don't think they'd be here long enough to really collaborate, unfortunately.

i heard about the ghost mice, show, i'm gonna try and make it. that would be great to set up a benefit with them. we definately need some benefits!!

keep in touch!

workshops

I think the poetry/spoken word workshop would be interesting to help organize for the same reasons that you were intimidated. I generally don't like to express or share my poetry and writing for fear that it has that amateur melodramatic quality, and probably other people are scared to share their poetry for similar reasons. I think the workshop could be a conversation. rather than being a show and tell right off the bat, it could be a talk about ourselves and others that we admire, genres that we like et cetera, and create confidence sosmehow to help people preform their poetry carefree.
as far as price, it could be like a suggested donation of 3 bucks or something and if someone doesn't have the money they can still participate.
I also think that misled youth has a lot of experience with all kinds of art and we could run a sort of all inclusive art workshop, and each week or month or whatever increment we'd have them in focus on a different kind of art and tell them they can come during open studio hours and learn more about it.
anyway I have to go to a baby shower now, peace.

mos def

I think having some kind of workshop/class where we put images and action together, creating messages through art. I know just seeds does a lot of stuff like that, and i think that having that kind of art with a message is really important. personaaly if there was a workshop like that i would take it, i would say i could help bottom line it, but i dont have all that much experience when it comes to that kind of thing, however i have plenty of art experience, and im sure that would be useful. So we should def try and get that off the ground. We could use all types of media to do it, screen printing, painting, murals, grafitti, stickers, posters, anything at all. There are so many ways to communicate through art. It can be loud, in your face, and wild. I would most def help get that together.
Benefits are a must! we want to keep the space long enough to get use out of it. I know we are all tired of trying to make money and plan all this shit in orger to make it, but it has to happen. Hopefully when we start our meetings we can cover classes and workshops along with the benfit money making shit.
The spoken word/poetry thing sounds like an amazing idea trhat i am 100% down with, helping and participating in etc. I write a lot of poetry and i have been for quite some time.
Also, with all this art and creativity, a little gallery would be nice. MAybe at the end of each workshop, however long we decide to run each program, maybe there doesnt even have to be a time limit to them, but we can have like presentations, show them off, etc...
I think teachers are important, but i dont think there should be like, "im the teacher youre the students, everyone has something to say, everyone has something to tach, and everyone has something to learn.
Now the Ghost Mice show is coming up, i plan on talking to them when they come about the benfit shows. I know nick, sarah D's old teacher, has some connection with some of the bands. So maybe he could help us out.
I hope that the space is coming along well, im sad im not around to help build it, but i plan to be around to set up these classes and watch and help it grow in something amazing (not that it isnt already).
PEace and Love, i miss you all so much

I've been working a lot lately so I haven't been able to help much with the building... I guess the building is going to take longer than expected, so maybe you'll get a chance to help. The classes and workshops sound interesting -- and they are a really good use for the space.

I'll post more later. It's great to see ppl posting and sharing ideas!

art workshop

hey gabe and ceecee and brendan

we've been going to the space at least 3x a week for the past few weeks, building the studio and setting up. we still have a ways to go, but we are making progress. I'm really excited about the visual communications (or whatever it's gonna be called) workshops. I'm inspired by the “art of communication” class that Leanne and Sarah D did in school (Nicholas taught it), we can take a lot from that. We can have guest artists too, and the class can end in an art exhibit and a night of performance and stuff. I think it will have to go for at least 1-2 months for ppl to be able to develop and finish some kind of art project, and towards the end we should have the studio open almost every day so ppl can finish their work. I would like to find out who is serious about making this workshop happen, and the putting a lesson plan together, researching on what we want to include, contacting people, and then promoting the class. Who want to work on this/ i am already brainstorming ideas and making lists like what skills ppl can learn in the workshop, what kinds of projects can come out of it, and resources that can help us create this workshop.

from the meeting weekss ago...

We talked about this and as I said from the meeting weeks ago I will dedicate time in developing this workshop. I have information from taking the class, which can be helpful, though I don't think we should completely model it after that. I'm also interested in doing something about the People's History concept. I guess that can be a subtopic in the Art of Communication workshop. Or maybe an independent workshop series.

workshops

hey leanne and friends

i met with this girl tina today, she's excited about doing a poetry/spoken word workshop, which i am gonna help out with, though i won't be an official teacher or anything. I was also telling her about our idea for the visual communication workshop, and we discussed how they overlapped. We want to outline both workshops week by week. I know there are some parallels, especially at the beginning and the end of the series. We thought that the first class could me a merge of both the poetry and art, we would all make books to use in the upcoming weeks for writing, art or both. And at the end both workshops would come together again for a night of exhibition and performance showing what everyone accomplished over the course of 6 or 8 weeks or however long the classes last. Between these ideas for a beginning and an ending there's a lot to be discussed. I know that we agreed that we wanted both workshops to focus on whatever messages or ideas each participant wants to express, and basically support them in developing that idea into a work of art. Maybe we should set aside a separate meetings to plan the workshops? I'm also gonna ask my friend Fly for advice since she has a lot of experience doing workshops like this. I'd like to consult with Nicholas too. Let's get together and make this happen!
