Ok this is the thread where people can introduce themselves. I'll start with myself. My name is Sarah.

I'm 20 years old, born and raised in NYC. I helped start the Misled Youth Network two years ago. Right now I'm working with two other people on building this website. I consider myself a self educator, and at times an artist, a designer, a writer, and an activist. My devotion to youth organizing stems from my belief that helping this generation grow into smart, creative leaders with a sense of justice will create ripple effects of change in the future. What else? I listen to all kinds of music, especially punk rock and hip hop. I ride my bike everywhere I go. I'm planning on starting a vegetable garden in my back yard this spring.

hopefully there will be more intros from others here soon

Hey, I'm Ethan. I'm 17 years old, born and raised in Atlanta, GA. My favorite type of music is punk, but on occasion I'll listen to just rock, metal, and some classical. I've been studying religion for the past 3 or 4 years, and if I decide to go to college (which I'm not sure about yet), I hope to major in philosophy and religious studies. There's a lot of things I don't like about our society, some relate to people, some to religion, and some to the government, but I'm not sure what I can do to help change them. That's one of the reasons I'm here, to learn how to be more active.

I'll come right out and say it now, I am an anarchist. I don't think that will shock anyone who reads these boards, but throughout my life i have come to the conclusion that the current course our world is taking will lead to our downfall. I believe that we should all live our lives, not to become what society says is "successful" or "appropriate", but to do what WE want with OUR lives. One of the things that pisses me off the most is when I feel as though someone else is trying to control my life. Anything from people pressuring me to go to college and get a good job so I can make a lot of money, to potentially being forced into a draft for the war in Iraq. (I have already told my parents that I would rather be sent to prison than be forced to enlist in the military) I believe that we are long past due for a revolution of any kind, and that a new system needs to be set up in which no one is any better or worse than anyone else.

Well, there ya go. Sorry if it was kinda long, but I needed to let out a rant haha. Anyways, I'm hoping to get a lot of positive feedback on this site, so thanks ahead of time.

what's up ethan! i'm glad that when i shout out into cyberspace somebody hollas back! What religions are you studying? I think that lots of people feel the same way as you, upset about what they see in solciety but not sure how to respond. We're planning on having a big part of Misled Youth focus on activism. Matter of fact i JUST finished writing up a rough draft of the intro to the "Get Involved with the Rest of the World" section which doesn't actually exist yet. Do you wanna tell me what you think of it? Be as critical as you like.
Also, I was wondering if yr into computer/tech stuff and would have any interest in helping to build this website.

Here's the piece, and thanks for posting
--sarah

Get involved in the rest of the world

It’s not easy to view ourselves as of agents of change in a world where injustice and oppression seem to prevail. We hear new horror stories every day. Sometimes they’re too close, pressing down on us and immobilizing us, until we start getting used to them. Sometimes they’re too far away, just vague atrocities that we feel we have no hope of touching or understanding, let alone resolving.

But many of us also realize that these struggles really come down to us -- individually and collectively -- simply trying to carve out space for ourselves to grow freely and create worlds we want to inhabit. It’s a matter of learning from our experiences and using our imaginations so that we can survive and thrive in a world we didn’t create but hope to change.

The Misled Youth Network has a special focus on organizing and activism because we see these actions as links closing the cycle of youth empowering themselves and their communities from the inside out. Many of us have been mistreated, misrepresented, and miseducated. Over time we recover, build community, learn, and express ourselves. When we get involved in making change, we’re passing on everything we’ve learned and moving closer to our visions for future generations.

In this section of the website, we’ve gathered info on a huge range of current struggles, movements, and issues with resource lists to help you get started on getting involved. We believe that all these struggles are linked in their common goals of freedom, justice, and human dignity. We don’t focus on any one ideology or strategy for change. We’ll support you whether you’re running for office or running from the law, as long as you’re pushing towards a world that you truly would want to live in.

Got issues?
Contribute info on a listed issue, or add a new one.

Host an issue

Are you really passionate about a particular issue? You can host an issue and help other youth get plugged into the cause you’re really hyped about.

(the last two things would be links to new pages)

Hi, I'm Brendan, and I'm one of the three working on MYN and the site right now.

I have a lot of interests, though it varies over time what I'm most focused on. Some are: psychology, learning, photography, neuroscience, cooking, virtual worlds/games, technology in general, thinking, analyzing things...

I learn best in the context of projects, and I haven't generally liked school much. I dropped out of high school (after planning and discussing it with my parents), and went to college a few times. But even though college was way better than high school, it still didn't work for me very well. I think it varies a lot how much a given person can put up with and benefit from different types of schooling.

I love learning, though, and learning outside of formal schooling -- and helping others to -- is a major life goal of mine. And, I especially like applying what I learn to accomplishing things that matter to me and others.

So... welcome, everyone... let's get these forums and this site active again.

That intro looks really good Sarah. I like how you made it kind of personal towards the end, it almost makes me feel like this place could be a sort of second home for someone who needs it.

I've been trying to study pretty much any religion I can get information on, from Christianity, to Scientology, even Satanism. But the religions that interest me the most are the eastern religions, Buddhism especially. I was born and raised Christian, but I think my parents are beginning to accept the fact that I don't believe in God, at least not the one described in the bible. There's just so many contradictions in the Christian faith (not to mention the church, which is the worst part of it all) that I became completely disenchanted with the entire thing.

Religion just seems to be the source of so much in our world, good and bad. I like to analyze the different aspects of them to try and figure out why that is. For that, I'm thinking of minoring in phsycology if I decide to go to college. I'm also interested in quantum physics, number theory, and art. My favorite artist is Dali and I do a lot of surrealist art myself. I've got a couple sketchbooks full of things I've drawn, and I hope to turn some of them into paintings eventually.

thanks ethan, glad you like it
now we have to actually build the page it will be on

we're kinda having a hard time getting this site together since we want to have lots of interactive features on it that require lots of time and tech skills (read "about this website" under About Us to see what we have planned for the site. Brendan's the only one with real tech experience, Nick's just beginning, and i don't know shit. we all have a lot to learn in order to create this site, i've been trying to get through this boring ass computer book for weeks. What we'd really like is a bigger group of people who could work on this, but that's way easier said than done. So now we're thinking of putting more energy into building up a community of people who are interested in thinking through these ideas online and in person. Our hope is that sometime soon, we'll have enough people, knowledge and energy gathered to get this site built without being completely overwhelmed.

So the question is: what do we do in the meantime to get the ball rolling? One thing is getting way more content up on the site -- forum posts, articles, artwork, etc. Another is to have a dialog with people on what they want this project to be. We already have a pretty clear outline what we want and what steps we need to take to make it, but we need to break them down into "bite-sized" pieces so they are easier to pass on to others.
Anyway, that's just what's on my mind in terms of this project.

I think i share a lot of yr sentiments on religion. Sometimes I read the little Jesus flyers that people hand out on the street, and i just can't believe that so many people can take this stuff seriously. It seems like many hardcore christians care more about whether you are following the right rules and reciting the right words than they care about whether your actions are good. Judaism was passed on to me from my mother, though my family is not very religious. However, my mom wants be to go to Israel this spring through this free program than sends young jews on a trip to Israel with their peers. I have very mixed feelings about it. Honestly this so called promised land sounds like a hell on earth to me. People are being killed every day. The same people who survived the horrors of the holocaust are now oppressing Palestinians in the occupied territories. When will people learn? Beyond that, i just don't like being stuck in a bus for hours with people i don't really know in a sweltering desert. I don't know.

Dali was one of my favorite artists for a while. I did a painting in HS that was sort of a homage to his style. Remedios Varo is a little known woman surrealist painter who i think is really cool. there's a wikipedia article about her. Definitely paint! I'm gonna start an art gallery thread so we can put stuff up. There's a great website you should check out -- conceptart.org. They have tons of talented user who share their work and learn from each other, anyone can join.

I like to keep my bios short.

My name is Matt, I'm 18 from NYC (Long Island more specific). I go to college for music education. I play a lot of music and instruments, 9 of them. I teach music right now for kids and I give free lessons from time to time. I don't really have any concrete political views. As far as religion goes, I support the Dalai Llama in coexistance. That's about it.

mad love to the new folks, systemreject and swami. it's so nice to see people engaging each other on this site once again. what this baby needs is nourishment...by the actions, ideas, thoughts, and opinions of many different people.

of course, mad mad love to the 3 musketeers Eye-wink

my name is Michael, i'm 26, and i live in various states of mind. i've known Sarah and Nick for over two years and Brenden for something like a year since he first came to the city to get involved with us misled youth.

I've been committed to this "network" since before it had a name, although with varying degrees of involvement due to the erratic nature of my life.

what else...hmmm. this is what i put on myspace:

italian. schizoaffective. writer. editor. reader. teacher. thinker. smoker. drinker. musician. scientist. philosopher. comedian. actor.

I was born on a nuclear air force base during a heat wave. I grew up in NYC and Ohio. I'm a PTSD survivor.

I to am very interested in theology. I have been studying religion since about the age of 8. in fact, my thoughts have at times been consumed by theological questions. in college, i chose to double major, one being sociology with a focus on the sociology of religion.

most individuals are good and decent and their religious beliefs, as almost all do, spring from a foundation of peace, love, kindness, and compassion. what is it then about the psychology of groups ( sociology) that changes this nature?

why are so many religions, since the rise of man, so similar? could it be because they all represent a psychological need for the sacred and profane? could it be because they have all come from a collective desire to answer certain mysteries about ourselves and the world around us? it it not then obvious that all of them have been created in the minds of people, simply changing various aspects to meet the times and the culture.

can we not live in the same manner almost all religions preach without following their dogma? is God egotistical? i just can't accept that if i am a good person with a good heart who has lived a better life than a person who believes that i will be doomed simply for not believing in his existence.

these are just some of the things i like to think about. sorry, but i haven't gotten a chance to talk about that stuff in awhile. anyway, i also am very much into mathematics, space, and all things scientific. i was gonna talk about some other stuff, but i went off on that religious tangent and now my thoughts are scattered. will post again soon.

Hey, I'm Jamie.

I'm seventeen, and I do a lot of things. I like to write, love language and how awesome it is when you string it all together just right, love reading, and I have a ton of other things I'm interested in, too. Psychology is always fun, and I'd love to be a teacher one day if they weren't all dirt poor.

I really just wanted to say hello....

to sarah in regards to a possible trip to Isreal. i'm all for world travel and i can't say for sure that i wouldn't go, but, and maybe i've been brainwashed by the media here, if you go, i will be worried sick about your physical well being. also, i hate to think what would happen if you were to see any Palestinians being mistreated.

me and nick watched the 6th sense last night, i didn't fall asleep till 7am. was thinking about similar types of questions and picturing all sorts of horrors. No more creepy movies for me.

I'm trying out to be an art model tomorrow. Wish me luck. Also i'm applying for a tutoring position. Money sucks.

I guess that's what's new with me. Oh and we'd all love feedback from anyone on our ideas for the website described in misled-youth.org/about/site

i'll post again soon -- just need to collect my thoughts

Hi!

Hey everybody
I'm Nick, the third core member of the misled youth network. After a little while of scrambling to put this site up I suddenly stopped a few weeks ago partially because I felt kind of sick of doing virtually all the work for the site (which includes having to learn how to do all this tech stuff) but mostly because I wanted to go back to studying art.
It's very difficult to create such a grandiose self-education network and at the same time continue to pursue our own self-education. Drawing alone is something I could study for a lifetime, let alone all the other stuff I want to learn. But now that we're using the internet as our medium (we were originally zine-based, hoping to compile a book) drawing is almost useless for this project and I have to learn all this technical computer shit... which isn't really so bad, but what I really want to do is learn how to paint.
So, right now I'm on a little vacation from this site. Sarah and Brendan, the other two core members, are gonna try to bring more people in to distribute the crushing weight that is misled-youth.org, and hopefully that will make it easier for us to put some of the more complicated elements of this site together.
Oh, and for an introduction... I'm 20, born in Manhattan, I've lived in every borough of New York except Queens, I like punk rock and some hip hop and I believe that government, class and politics would all be made obsolete if more people use their library card. I'm a scrawny, medium height boy with a sort of oddly shaped nose and a receding hairline. I'm usually more quiet than most people are comfortable with, I went to four different high schools and a wilderness program before I ran away and about a year ago I got my GED. One of the schools I went to was the most fucked up place I've been in my entire life and contributed a lot to my social phobias, but also got me thinking about alternative methods of helping so-called "misled" youth. about a year after running away, during a time when I was going insane with depression, shortly after the place me and sarah (and michael) were living in was set on fire by the police, we decided to start the Misled Youth Network... the rest of the story is probably on the site somewhere.
Damn. That was a longer introduction than I thought it would be.

Hey

My name's Alice, but that's not my real name. I'm a nineteen-year-old vegetarian female from North Carolina. I've lived here almost my whole life. I spent a month in Georgia a long time ago. I dropped out of a university college (technically I was suspended) because I just couldn't get comfortable. I'm an anarchist and I travel a lot. I dont like staying in the same place for very long, but I'm taking advantage of a great opportunity and opening my house for my friends to stay there (the agreement with my mom is that I must stay too). I love biking, I am excited to be learning about composting, gardening, other DIY things and of course living my life as freely as possible. I love all kinds of music from The Flamingos in 1959, Pink Floyd in the 70's, Husker Du in the 80's, everything from the 90's (hey, i'm a 90's kid) and as for today's music, I like a little bit, but mostly I stick to the underground local scene to get my current musical need filled. Ummm I dont know what else. You can ask if you want to know anything. Except no, you dont get my real name, but there's reasons for that. Smiling Thanks for the kind welcomes to the board in other threads!

Hi Hannah!

That's exciting. I love comics! I just read a bunch of them yesterday that I forgot we had. Misled Youth was once going to have a comic but it fell apart. I look forward to seeing your work.

Yeah, do bad you can't come to the Book Fair. There should be an Anarchist Comic Convention...

Hey Everyone,
This is a really exciting thread. Sharing a few things about each other definitely creates a feeling of community and closeness in this virtual space. I've always wondered about the people behind these screen names, its nice to meet everyone!

My name is Leanne. I'm seventeen years old. I've been living in Queens since I moved to New York when I was 12 from Manila, Philippines. I consider myself an activist. I believe in youth liberation, education reform, support systems for young people and their projects (like the work Misled does) and immigrant rights. I stand against the prison industrial complex, capitalism, workers exploitation and neo-liberalism. I became vegetarian a little over a year ago which instigated a lot of disapproval and shock within my family and close family friends. I play the drums and I'm in a band called "Tighty Whitey and the Minorities" however since we're all graduating high school, its been almost impossible to get everyone together. I listen to a variety of music genres ranging from punk, folk, samba, underground hiphop, electronic ambient, trip-hop, alternative, old reggae, latin, etc. But I associate with punk and folk music the most.

Im part of a group called YELL! (The Young Eclectic Liberation Leaders). We've been working closely with MYN in attempt to end apathy among the youth and start shit up within our communities. I'm really happy to be part of this network.

Hey, I'm Richelle. I'm 15.

Hey, I'm Richelle. I'm 15. I'm a dreamer stuck in the back woods of Pennsylvania. Eccentric is among the milder things I've been called. I LOVE all forms of expression, and I HATE how the educational system interferes with my sleeping and my creativity. My musical tastes are varied and I tend to shy away from the mainstream most of the time. And if I wrote much more this would end up being one big rant, so I'm gonna leave it at that for now.

Hello, its awesome how many

Hello, its awesome how many people know about Misled Youth, especially people who arn't from NYC. Welcome Everyone!

My name is Gabe Weinstock i call myself an anarchist but i tend to get shit for it simply because people dont want to hear what i have to say about it and its become this whole like fake punk shit thing so people just thinks its some big joke without really every trying to understand it. I joined Misled Youth and im having a load of fun doin stuff. Misled youth really helped me alot and gave me this satisfied feeling that ive been lacking for some time. I m 15 and i got to LaGurdia Arts high school in nyc. I dont really love what school has become, i very oppressive environment where rules and testing comes before genuine education, therefore i try and learn as much outside of school as i can and make the most out of school when im in it. Ive always considered myself politically active but in the past few years its become a major force in my life. I love the world i just dont love the systems and limits we set for ourselves as human beings, and i have faith that we can change. I like all kinds of music but listen mostly to Punk and hip hop i love art and i love being outdoors and adventures. I party i work and i do what i can to make the world a better place. I love Misled Youth i really am greatful for it and im enjoying every project we are working on. I guess thats me.

aww shucks

gabe you're suck a sweetheart. i'm so happy that misled youth means so much to you.

I don't call myself an anarchist as much as i used to, though i still hold the same beliefs and am a part of that community. I just didn't like the assumptions people made based on that label, and i didn't want to put any ideology before my actions themselves.

Welcome Richelle! My dad is from the back woods of Pennsylvania -- this little town called Auburn. my life would have been so different if i'd grown up there. anyways, hope to see you a lot on the forums and maybe in person someday!

Sorry to all the ones who know me from previous incarnations for not being on here - I hope that being on here on MYN will be part of my productivity & not just some kind of expression & online socializing

- nothing wrong with that -

.. but I must continue on my slow path to finally increasing productivity - getting my ideas out & visable .

Improving - moving - learning - living .

So Hi to all Smiling

Nice to meet all the

Nice to meet all the newcomers. I'm Ethan by the way, I introduced myself earlier in the thread if you wanna see what I'm into. I'm still a relatively new member of MYN myself, but in a little more than a year I should hopefully be in New York becoming a core member. It's awesome that we're getting people in Europe too, maybe this could eventually become a world wide network. Now that would be kick ass haha.

hey all..

hey guys, how's everyone doing?

i've been getting the emails, awesome work on getting that space.

listen, i'm sorry i haven't been around in a while to help out with everything. i dont' expect to reap any benefits of whatever you all are doing here, but try and understand that i've been quite busy in recent times due to numerous family illnesses.

that being said, i'll still be reading the emails and whatnot but i probably won't be able to come around for a while.i don't know how long this will be, i'll definitely be reading the forums though.

keep up the good work,
matt.
