I was thinking that we should make a way for us to share the music we like with each other. I don't know if it's possible to send each other mp3's or anything, maybe we could just list bands/artists we like and check out what other people listed.

SWAMI, do you have any recordings of yr music?

just a thought...

I for one

love this thread. Anywho, I wanted to post the lyrics of one of the songs I've been listening to a lot lately. I like doing this and will do it more in the future. These are some strong lyrics but also evoke a sense of a common struggle, at least common in my world growing up. What I mean is, I always connected with this song on a common level, not exactly, but damn close. I wish we could post like music clips or something, that would be cool. Hear the word:

I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side staying alive was no jive At second hands, moms bounced on old men so then we moved to Shaolin land A young youth, yo rockin the gold tooth, 'Lo goose only way, I begin to gee off was drug loot And let's start it like this son, rollin with this one and that one, pullin out gats for fun But it was just a dream for the teen, who was a fiend started smokin woolies at sixteen And running up in gates, and doing hits for high stakes making my way on fire escapes No question I would speed, for cracks and weed the combination made my eyes bleed No question I would flow off, and try to get the dough all sticking up white boys in ball courts my life got no better, same damn 'Lo sweater times is ruff and tuff like leather Figured out I went the wrong route so I got with a sick ass click and went all out Catchin keys from across seas Rollin in MPV's, every week we made forty G's Yo nigga respect mine, or anger the tech nine Ch-chick-POW! Move from the gate now

It's been twenty-two long hard years of still strugglin survival got me buggin, but I'm alive on arrival I peep at the shape of the streets and stay awake to the ways of the world cause shit is deep A man with a dream with plans to make C.R.E.A.M. Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15 A young buck sellin drugs and such who never had much trying to get a clutch at what I could not touch The court played me short, now I face incarceration Pacin -- going up state's my destination Handcuffed in back of a bus, forty of us life as a shorty shouldn't be so ruff But as the world turns I learned life is hell living in the world no different from a cell Everyday I escape from Jakes givin chase, sellin base smokin bones in the staircase Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth Who explained working hard may help you maintain to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot Leave it up to me while I be living proof to kick the truth to the young black youth But shorty's running wild smokin sess drinkin beer And ain't trying to hear what I'm kickin in his ear Neglected, but now, but yo, it gots to be accepted That what That life is

that's pretty badass, guys.

that's pretty badass, guys. as for my music, i have two things going at the moment:

1) my band
2) my solo work

the band is almost done recording the cd, i'll send out free copies to whoever.
my solo stuff isn't really anywhere, i'm still writing it all.

as for sharing music, anyone can im me and ill send you whatever i have. torrents also work, we could establish a tracker maybe?

as for lyrics, here are my pick of the day:

abused

now that everybody's wanting expression
not that you wanted to use
it seems untrue now
but the funniest thing is
it fits you now
through the profanity

you may never understand this affliction
i already feel the effects you feel too
abused now, body and mind
abused now, almost all of the time
been abused
abused
abused

sunday morning hanging out with my brother
watching the lady in black tell the news how
you're supposed to behave, and tell the truth now
you don't know what to say
we've been abused
abused
abused
abused
abused
abused
abused

other people see some evil intention
but the closer you get, the more you get
confused now, why does everyone know
been abused now, didn't want it to show

a waste of keystrokes

Michael - bring the ruckus... have you ever listened to Mr Lif? I'd say he's my favorite emcee these days... Sarah plays him all the time

SWAMI - what band are you in/what type(s) of music is it? and i've been meaning to ask you what your nine instruments are. That's pretty incredible.

I've mostly been listening to older punk lately... I first got into punk listening to just english stuff, so now I'm looking into the american hardcore stuff. I definitely know there's tons of bands that are probably great that I never heard of, so if there are any suggestions I'd really appreciate it...

For a while I was getting into hip hop a lot. I still like it and all, but I think I'll always just identify more with punk. hip hop is usually more about coming off slick, punk's more about being a spaz. I never come off slick.

The best lyrics, I am convinced, are by the Subhumans. Almost every song is great. The Dead Kennedy's are great too, and I'd put OP IV third. Here's a subhumans song called Waste of Breath...

You paint your leather jacket but it comes off in the rain
And the more you cut your hair the more it grows again
The badges you pin on yourself fall off or start to rust
And the more they take the piss the less people you can trust

[Chorus:]

It's the story of your life
And the end of it's your death
And every word that's in between
Is just a waste of breath

You don't know who you might have been or who you now should be
Or what you ought to write on walls or why you wanna be free
And then you start to panic cos the inspiration's there
But your not sure how to use it anyway and no one seems to care

[Chorus]

You're the classic all-round failure who never seems to win
You'd like to write a book but you're not sure how to begin
It's the story of your life
And the end of it's your death
And every word that's in between is just a waste of breath

[Chorus]

also, has anyone ever listened to the Goons? I remembered them being around back in the late nineties, they're from DC. The guy sounds like a cross between HR from Bad Brains and Lee Ving from Fear. They're lyrics aren't so great, but I've been listening to them a lot lately cause I just rediscovered them. You can download stuff from their website, my favorites are "Everyday" and "Closing Time in America/I'm Alright".

Take the piss

That's such a great English phrase.

Those are some pretty good lyrics, kinda depressing though.

I've not heard of Mr. Lif. I'll have to check him out.

hip hop is usually more about coming off slick, punk's more about being a spaz.

You should check out MF Doom.

never listened to rocket from the crypt, hot snakes, nick drake or elliot smith. I'll look into them. I just asked sarah if she knew any of them, she said elliot smith was sorta popular for a while and then killed himself. I was in some butthole institution for the duration of that, so I missed it. there's like a two year period where I missed out on everything that happened in the world. "against me" is another one of those things. I never heard of them before I went in and by the time I came out, they were a cliche. and leftover crack went from some random c-squat band to uber cult-status legends. it's weird...

anyway, I'm ramblin'. your band on myspace sounded cool - I definitely hear the nirvana/grunge influence. and the logo makes that even more clear. I'm really into the song sub mission- Is that you on bass?

that's a damn impressive list of instruments. is it easy once you learn one string instrument to learn another? or are they all totally different? I always wanted to play the violin... but I never actually tried. I took guitar lessons when I was fifteen but I didn't really have the drive to do it. It wasn't until fairly recently that I decided I wanted to do stuff. when did you start learning to play?

ho'kay, so

rocket from the crypt - san diego rock band with horns. not ska. NOT SKA.
song to check out: born in '69

hot snakes - uber awesome punk band from san diego, they only play on the downstroke which makes them my favourite band ever.
song to check out: unlisted

elliott smith - really cool songwriter from portland. died of a self-inflicted stab wound to the heart [no joke]. he has a lot of free music up at these spots:
www.trashtreasury. com [for live shows]
www.sweetadeline.net [official site]
www.elliotsmithbsides.com [i think it works still]
songs to check out: happiness, abused

nick drake - folk singer/songwriter from england in the 70's? writes the best sleep music ever. check out "Pink Moon" [its the song in the VW commercial]

against me! - i don't really like em, i dont know many "punx" who are into them. in fact, i dont know anyone who's into them.

leftover crack - formed outta the debri [sic] of choking victim and the crack rocksteady 7. all they do is rotate members and change up their name. and do crack. i like them a good bunch.

anyways, i do play the bass on Sub Mission. the irony is that i hate that song, i regret writing that bassline so much. As far as strings go, it's more important to learn the theory than the actual instruments, for the theory is transposable from one to the other. cheat-methods like tab is weak and won't get you far. i started playing viola when i was in 3rd grade so that would make me..... 7 at the time. ever since then i've been messing around with instruments. i got my 1st guitar when i was i guess 14? and i played it about 4 hours a day for a year. cause it's my dream to get good. i'm not quite there yet, but i have huge dreams. imean huge, symphonic shit.

oh yeah, i'm insane. but hey, i'm probably gonna blog a lot about music and theory and shit like that, so don't worry, i can teach all of you. [ its my job, i do it at a local school, plus its my degree aim]

(coming up with clever titles for everything is pissing me off)

sarah mentioned that elliot smith was emo, but damn, a self-inflicted stab wound to the heart... crazy.

I'll look up that other stuff. I don't really like against me much either - but i've definitely met people who are into them. You know we got choking victim to play a benefit for us? That was sorta what jumpstarted the group... it was called the livewire festival. we also booked m-1 of dead prez as our headlining act but he didn't show up... didn't seem to matter though, everyone was there for choking victim.

We're probably gonna book another show soon to promote the "official launch" of this site. You're welcome to play, solo-acoustic or with your band. We can start planning that if you're interested. Sarah and Brendan were talking about doing another event for a while.

ambitions and interests aren't insane, apathy is. And I still like the bassline in Sub Mission. it makes the song stand out.

lol crazy titles....

i wouldn't say he's emo, i'd say .... i dunno, hoover is emo. but dont' get me started on what's what, cause i have a really messy argument relating to the topic. ugh. i hate music labels so much.

and yeah, i read somewhere that you guys got choking victim to play, that's sick. sucks that dead prez didn't show. i'll consider playing by myself, i dunno how well that will work out as i've never played by myself. as for my band, i guess we could do it. i'm sure my group wouldn't mind the exposure, i'm just worried that we have no relevancy to our project BESIDES promoting expression. then again, i tend to be overly-specific in my relative thinking. [ i dunno what i just said, its ok]. and i meant insane ideas as in the kind of ideas that if you can't pull off, you go nuts cause you want it so badly.

hmm....

i have some ideas for sharing music:

1) google mail shared account. i know a good email acct tha does this with RFTC(Rocket From The Crypt) files and it's sick. You'd just send the file to the account from your personal email account. Then anyone can login to the shared acct and download said file.

2). A tracker for torrents. A lot of sites now are integrating trackers for torrents. wikipedia the idea if you don't understand what i'm saying.

3) cd mixes. these are cheesy, but they work. they certainly help introduce me to new music.

4) sharing over aim/chat programs. aim probably hosts it the best, but i know i've shared cds with friends via file transfer.

Fuck The RIAA, that's all.
If anyone has other ideas, feel free to spit 'em.

You may have heard this song before but i thought it would be cool to point out songs that i feel can stir the soul.

so the first one i'm suggesting everyone listen to right now is "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. it's an old soul standard from '61

make sure you won't be disturbed, close your eyes, breathe, listen...............

fuck the riaa / stand by me

Matt: I guess I missed this post. I don't know anything about torrents, but they've never worked for me, I usually use limewire. We do, um, have a website. I can make a "music" group specifically for sharing music and allow people to upload and downloads songs, or even huge zip files. I'd sorta like to keep it on the DL and amongst a small group, but I got no problem with it. Let me know and I'll set it up.

Michael: I just downloaded and played that song. You're right, if you close your eyes it really does stir the soul- it's very comforting. Punk stirs my soul sometimes, but it's hard to just point to a song and say "that song". Especially because I'm biased. there's a song called "soundsystem" by operation ivy - if I close my eyes and just listen to this song, the whole last seven years of my life go thru my head and my heart starts melting. Someone else would listen to that and think it sounded like some guy jumping on a spring mattress over and over and yelling. I guess, for me the music I like is so rooted in my experiences that they're hard to separate. But stand by me is powerful enough to make me think it was somehow part of my experience.

OH! I know a punk song that stirs the soul! it just popped up on itunes as I was thinking... it's called "safety pin stuck in my heart" by patrick fitzgerald. It might be hard to find... sarah ended up actually paying for it from itunes (which means I can't share it. grrr... fuck the riaa indeed).

OK, so....

A music section would be pretty cool. I can do research on a tracker if you want and throw you the info on it. Basically, if you upload a torrent from a tracker, you seed (upload) it to someone else on the tracker. Then when someone else wants to download(leech) it, the two seeders upload it. The more people download it the easier it is to download.

Operation Ivy is awesome, end story. Did you get all the free bootlegs on their site? Also, have you seen the new Tim Armstrong movie? It's a weird claymation story about Charles Manson.

As for the "protected" file, I bought a Billy Talent album off of Itunes about 1/2 a year ago. I burned it to cd and deleted the tracks off of Itunes. Recently I ripped it to Itunes and they came out in .mp3 format (i changed my ripping output extension, i cna show you how to do that). Anyways, now those files are shareable. I would try that idea if you don't know what else to do. It does require a CD, but it also backs up that file in case something should happen to it, you know?

Uhh, that's about it for now, I'm off to work. I'll see you guys later.

Kudos on the subhumans! Second, I saw the Goons in NC last year (?) and I bought a shirt from their merch guy. They're pretty rad, as far as I remember.

break it down break it down tear it apart

Matt: I'd be interested in learning more about torrents. I always get my hopes up finding three-albums=in-one-download stuff, but then when I try to download it it doesn't come in. Is it really much faster than just uploading a song, then linking to it? (speaking of which, I did get all those songs from the op iv site... but no, I was not aware that tim armstrong had a movie). I'll try to get a music group together and set up the attachment component of this site.

Alice: I really like the goons. I couldn't find their albums on limewire or soulseek, so what I ended up doing was going on their website, and if you go to thegoons.com/mp3s their's a bunch of secret stuff, including a zip file of one of their new albums, and a couple of things from other bands. However, what I was mostly looking for was "living in america," which is the album I used to have, and I ended up signing up and then canceling with emusic.com (with sarah's credit card, hehe), which gave me 25 free songs, enough to get that album and a few others I haven't been able to find.

It's a lot of trouble to go thru, but I was on a mission sorta. I also ended up with two songs by culture shock (part of my 25 free) which was cool (but be careful, there's a techno-dance thing of the same name).

I've been getting into Zounds a lot lately, too. just thought I'd throw that in. anyone who's never heard of them should check out "demystification" and "biafra".

local bands?

What are some local/smaller bands you guys are into?

There's an AWESOME anarchist folk band just started up here called Jake And The Infernal Machine- They seriously kick ass.
http://myspace.com/jakeandtheinfernalmachine

Colin And The Cancer are pretty good as well-although I liked their first demo a lot more than their latest stuff. If anyone wants it I can send you that demo...their EP is coming out in a couple weeks.
http://myspace.com/colinandthecancer

Rejected Society are getting real good, too- although I'm biased as they're my friends. Their full-length is coming out this month, and they have an EP out.
http://myspace.com/rejectedsociety1

So, what's up in NY/ wherever others are from?

hmmm... to be honest, I'm not so up to date on the local scene these days. I really should start going to shows again. rabia's good, the singer lives with us - they're nyc latin anarcho street-punk. They don't have a proper album yet, but they're recording one now (and it looks like I might do the cover art).

http://myspace.com/rabia.

There's another band called COBC that's good if you're into ska-punk... they're better than most third-wave bullshit, they sound a lot like no commercial value. They played at the livewire festival last year...

http://myspace.com/cedricobando

I'm mostly listening to classic punk nowadays I guess... if anyone can point me in the direction of good local nyc bands I'd greatly appreciate it.

I played this song for my

I played this song for my parents the other day to try to show them how I feel about our society and government. They said I was being paranoid and that they felt the same way when they were my age, so I asked them why they didn't do anything about it. In my opinion the people who realize all this is going on but don't do anything to fight it are worse than the ignorant people who don't even realize it's going on.

(it's a 17 minute song, so yeah, lots of lyrics haha)

Subhumans - Cradle to the Grave

"Well they took you from your mother's womb and put you in a school
Told you how to run your life by following the rules
Told you not to pick your nose or disrespect the queen
Scrub your teeth three times a day keep mind and body clean
Save up all your pocket money, nothing is for free
And you'd better trust your parents cos there's no one else you see
And then they send you off each day remember what you're told
"You may think you don't need teaching but you'll need it when you're old"

And if you're too intelligent they'll cut you down to size
They'll praise you til you're happy then they'll fill you full of lies
Cos intelligence is threatening and genius is sin
If you could ever see through them they know they'd never win

So they channel your ability into the right direction
If you're good enough and rich enough you can be a politician
On the other hand if your too thick they'll tell you that you're lazy
They'll put you down and wind you up until it drives you crazy

They'll say you ought to learn a trade to help you in your life
Success is written in three parts: A job, a house, a wife
They'll say that school prepares you for the awesome world outside
Well it certainly gives you bigotry and patriotic pride

Racism, sexism teacher to class
From school to work remains the sameare you white and middle class?

You'll learn that bad men dress in black and good men dress in white
And the pamphlets in the playground say that's right
And that girls were made for housework and boys were made to fight
And the naughty pictures on page 3 make everything alright

And so from school to the outside world these morals you will take
And unless you can reject them you'll have your mind at stake

They'll give you a decision when you get to 18, too
The right to vote for someone else who says he cares for you
But the only thing he cares about is getting to the top
By conning you with empty words that promise you a lot
But the end result is slavery to a false set of ideals
You'll be tempted to believe them cos they'll seem so very real
The slavery of attitudes that make you keep in line
Subconsciously devoted to the morals of our time

And when you end up on the dole which you very likely will
They'll offer you a brand new trade: Learning how to kill

Why don't you join the army? Be a man and not a fool
There's someone else to think for you just like there was at school

They'll promise you absolution from the murders you'll commit
In the name of god and country they can get away with it
They fill you full of orders and promise you rewards
Like busting up your family by sending you abroad
A holiday in Germany or Iceland or Hong Kong
Making money being useless well it seems it can't go wrong
But then it's off to Northern Ireland where you'll practice what they preached
You'll shoot to keep yourself alive and kill to keep the peace
And then it won't be so much fun as you hear the wounded crying
Cos before they couldn't speak english and you didn't know what they were saying
But when the children call you "Bastard" it will make you think again
When you cannot tell the difference between animals and men

Animals don't wear uniforms but they kill as much as you
But the army kills for money and animals kill for food
It's the basest degredation in the name of what is right
Become something you never were and regret it til you die

Cos your father will tell you "Sonny, you must do as you are told"
And you'll say the same thing to your kids when you're 32 years old
And unless you can react against the brainwash from the start
Your government will rule your mind and your mind will rule your heart
You'll conform to every social law and be the system's slave
From birth to school to work to death, from the cradle to the grave....."

a classic!!

the subhumans are sooo good, and this song was their epic masterpiece. I can't believe you got your parents to sit through the whole thing! if they think you're paranoid you should say "And somebody told me "Big Brother's watching you" And somebody else said "You know it's not true" Who do you believe?" there's a subhumans song for everything.

F.O.D.

nobody's been posting in this thread lately, but I want to bring it back. bunch of people mentioned some of local bands at the meeting today - I'm always looking for new music, but I've been really out of touch with the local scene since I was sent away over 5 years ago (jesus, that's longer than it seems). if anyone wants to repeat any of those bands (or others) in this thread, it would be greatly appreciated.

anyway, I just stumbled across an old band called Flag Of Democracy that I never heard of before. they're older stuff sounds like some of the more spastic dead kennedys songs (the singer sounds almost identical to jello biafra), their newer stuff is more melodic and reminds me of some of the descendents, but not the descendents stuff with all the dumb fart jokes or the melodramatic love songs. anyway, I like them a lot. the EP "love songs" and the LP "Shatter Your Day" are the best ones.

okay so yeah, i can't be much help with the local bands and all *shout out to RABIA* lol but two things came to me when i read this post: 1.) i know you like punk and hip hop...and i can learn you a little hip hop, but if you ever wanna give anything else a listen i could recommend some musical masterpieces. 2.) you know your shit when it comes to what you know and you wax it quite well. when we do any zines or free/entertaining publications you should definitely think about doing music columns and reviews.

anyway, yeah, Gabe CeCe, others, someone, educate this kid, he's thirsty.
