this is an important question that we need to figure out soon: how will we let people know that misled youth is up and running, and that we want them to get involved?

We've started talking about doing a split zine with YELL, but i think misled youth also needs some of its own materials. Since we have such multi-faceted project, it can be kinda confusing to try and explain everything we want to do in one chunk. I thought a good way to present the info would be to break it down into three parts: collaborative projects, self-education, and activism. (Peer support is another big part of misled youth, so far i haven't worked it into this particular idea. So those three aspects could be introduced with three questions:
What do you wanna do?
What do you wanna know?
What are you gonna do?

I made a design advertising the projects using this idea. It still needs a back side with an explanation of how the projects work, our web address, etc. I think it would be cool to screen print the red text. the text in the background is a bunch of ideas for potential projects. We could have a series of three of these arranged in a little booklet.

here it is:

what do you all think?

I generally love your design aesthetic...and this is no exception. I think it's great. I love the black and red and just the kind of feng shui of the design and the question. also the slight smatter effect of the red letters is nice. and, when i first looked at it i thought the text in the back was courier and thought it looked really good. you might consider it, unless you have some special ultra cool font in mind. keep up the good work!

thanks buddy

hahaha feng shui that reminds me of aresh with his weird little water fountain and superstitions.

the grey font is called lucida console, which is another font used in coding and stuff, but it's a little less common so i thought it would be more interesting.

but maybe i'll try some different fonts and post them up

i really like it. it looks professional, well crafted, and gets to the point. no bullshit here. i'm all for handing stickers or flyers with this on it out to anyone.

cool

Good to hear from you SWAMI. We're trying to figure out how we're gonna go about promoting misled youth in different stages, and what materials we can have by when. (Nick is putting up a post right now about a timeline we created to accomplish various goals. I'm typing kinda slow right now cause my finger is fucked up).

With the series of flyers i talked about in this thread, i thought it would be kinda cool to make a "kit" for them. Basically a paper bag with a screen printed or block printed design on the outside, filled with postcards and stickers that give people the info they need to get involved with misled youth. That would take us a little while to get ready, especially cause i'm working 40 hrs a week right now.

So the above design might be part of a slightly more long term project, and i guess we need to do something simpler to have ready for this conference a month away.

so we're trying to figure that out, it's kinda hard cause we're both pretty rusty in our visual art skills (especially me).

more updates soon...

ps -- you should check out the zine group and related discussions going on right now.

wow! we actually wrote something! read it!

so we need to get this thing together before NCOR, less that a week away. Me and Nick wrote this text that we want to put into a mini 4-page zine letting people know about misled youth. It will have graphics on the front and back, and this text in the middle two pages. What do you think?

Misled Youth is a network of young people based online and in NYC who have decided to take control of our education, collaborate with and support each other, and take a stand on the issues that matter to us. We resist apathy and ignorance to make space for our creativity and ideas. There are four parts to what we do:

SELF-EDUCATION AND LEARNING GROUPS
Misled Youth strives to be a place for people with common interests to come together and collectively explore an issue or idea, learn a skill, or share experiences in autonomous study groups.

Misled Youth will support individuals and groups who want to self-educate in any way we can, including providing information, online space, and communication tools. We will help self-educators document what they’ve learned and share it in our online library. We also do workshops as well as organizing and participating in events. To us, this is far more effective than any hierarchical education system because it’s fueled by inspiration, discovery, and collaboration rather than a teacher’s knowledge and a student’s memory.

COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS
Collaborative projects can range from fixing bikes to fixing airplanes, from organizing data to organizing festivals, or from writing graffiti to writing novels. The Misled Youth Network will devote as many tools as we can to whatever project you are interested in initiating. Current projects include poi/fire spinning, screen-printing, and zine making. Multiple groups can cross-collaborate on projects that involve and benefit the Misled Youth community, creating a growing network of education and inspiration.

YOUTH ACTIVISM
Many of us have been mistreated, misrepresented, and mis-educated. Over time we recover, build community, learn, and express ourselves. When we get involved in making change, we’re passing on everything we’ve learned and moving closer to our visions for future generations.

We’re gathering info on a huge range of current struggles, movements, and issues with resource lists to help you get started on getting involved. We believe that all these struggles are linked in their common goals of freedom, justice, and human dignity. We don’t focus on any one ideology or strategy for change. We’ll support you whether you’re running for office or running from the law, as long as you’re pushing towards a world that you truly would want to live in.

PEER SUPPORT
Just as we shouldn't have to rely on teachers for education, we shouldn't rely on guidance counselors for advice. We can't work on cool projects and teach ourselves things and make a difference in the world when we're feeling depressed, isolated, hurt, or confused. This part of our project hasn’t been developed yet, but we see peer support as an essential future goal. Check our website [LINK] to for more support resources.

Good work... the text is a really good description of MYN, and a really like the idea of a 4-page thing... big enough to have some content to it, but small enough that people are likely to check out the whole thing.

The design above is cool, too... I somehow missed the thread earlier. Are you going to use that design on the 4-page thing?

well hey

what do you want me to say I mean it's damn solid. No editorial concerns, good word choices, clear sentence structure, clear presentation of ideas. I say get the design down and run with it!

I already put this on the home page, but I figured maybe forum regulars don't even see the front page, they just check the active forum topics, so here it is again, the front and back of the 4-page flyer.

so we probably won't make many of these cause color is expensive, but i made a color version for the web. what do you think? Me and Nick agreed we were pretty sick of doing all this computer generated design, so this is going back to the DIY style.

"Proceed with Caution"

So...pretty much any color would've been aesthetically pleasing, however, this color is that kind of yellow-orange that reminds me of traffic lights, which invokes a feeling of cautiousness. The deeper meaning attached to this color is wholly appropriate, it fits nicely. So, whether you meant it or not, i say Kudos! on a job well done. have fun at NCOR!

-Michael

oh jeez...you know what just hit me. it's also like construction site yellow, which also has cool associated meanings.
