YELL has asked the misled youth design team (aka me and nick) to create a poster advertising their upcoming youth liberation conference in may. So far i haven;t had a chance to sit down and brainstorm some ideas. So i'm just starting this thread as a place for us all to brainstorm collectively. So if you wake up in the middle of the night with yr heart racing and shout "i've got the perfect design concept!", write it down here.

yelling

i thought one kinda obvious image would be someone yelling words in a bold bright style. This is an image i created maybe a year ago with that idea in mind.

i'm also looking at some political posters from the 70's to get ideas. A lot of them were screenprinted. I'm interested in using printmaking techniques for this project. thoughts?

Thats soooooooooo hot! We've been talking and talking about what kind of flyer we wanted, Leanne and I both think that's a really cool image. We wanted to give you the liberty to do what you please. We don't have any specific ideas in mind, and we're going to have different flyers (last years with updated info, one of the girls in our school drew one up, etc..) But I guess this one would be deemed "official".

The image is really

I really like the image! The design is relevant and I think it would transfer very well when converted to black and white photocopies. Your ideas for 70s inspired posters sounds really unique. Sarah Dinan used an image of a lady from the 50s for our last poster and I thought it looked great.
Someone critiqued that it was somewhat contradictory to have a lady from the 50s whose views are not as liberated as we in YELL! promote. But i didnt care, that was a comment from an ageist power tripping staff from our school. I thought the flyer looked cool.

I think this will be the poster that will be most dispersed on the internet, and also hard copies. I dont have a scanner so I dont know how to make to make our flyers digital. I'm doing it old school cut and paste DIY.

Here are the basic info that needs to be on the flyer:

May 25, 2007
4 - 9pm
35-59 81st Jackson Heights, Queens
Take the 7 train to 82nd Street

It was suggested at the YELl! meeting that maybe we should have a catch phrase or a list of workshops. What do you guys think? What other info do we need?

ageist power trippers dont know shit

i'm trying to figure out of it would be possible to create an image that would look good in both black and white and color. Cause usually b+w copies only look good with no greys.

As far as info goes, i think it would be cool to actually list at least some of the workshops on the poster, which means it couldn't really get made until we actually start booking things. If not that, i at least want to have lots of relevant words and phrases to include, because i think the jumble of type would be a big part of the design.

let's keep brainstorming

i agree

since YELL! doesn't really have events fully planned yet, it's probably smarter to just associate yourselves with the ideas you're trying to promote.

Temporary Flyer

This is a flyer I made and Sarah Dinan (another YELL! member) helped me out. I made it for NCOR and another conference that was happening that weekend. Since we don't have a workshop line-up just yet I thought of putting old workshops on the background so people have an idea of what the conference is about.

what i'm wondering about is what images we're gonna burn into screens next week

some YELL graphics would be cool, and I`have these old engraving images of vegetables i'd like to print. We should figure out all these graphics soon, we only have a week...

poster in progress

ok, so i have been working on getting this poster together for the YELL youth activist conference. Brendan helped me take some reference photos,i did some sketches and make a basic mock up in photoshop to figure out the colors and composition. So with the image below i'm pretty happy with the colors and composition, though i think the shapes of the head and the three figures probably need work. I might need more photos to modify it the way i want. I want to hand letter the text "3rd Annual Youth Activist Conference inside the head in a way that molds into the shape. Or I might do the lettering so it comes out of the mouth like the sunbeams. I'm not sure i'm gonna stick with the font i have on there now, though i think it's pretty cool.

Also i have to figure out the process of printing this poster. I want to print on these big brown paper bags i have, that's why i made the background brown. Nick thought that most of the shapes were simple enough that i might be able to do the with stencils, and just have a screen for the lettering. I just had the idea that since spraypainting stencils can be pretty messy and unpredictable, maybe i could apply printing ink over the stencil using a little paint roller like the kind you paint trim with. Would that work?

It would be good to not use too make screens. I have to figure out how the ink and paint works on the paper and how the work with each other. Let me know what you think!

Great Mock up!

I really like the colors. I agree with you that the three figures need some detail work. It also makes me wonder why we only have three people raising their fists, what do you think about having a band of kids? Just a suggestion.

The profile shouting looks really cool. Is that you?
I've never used printing ink for stencils so I cant tell if itll work or not. I would definitely try it out with you though. This looks so professional. Thank you so much!

By the way, Ive been working on a poster for a class project. I'm doing it on Brad Will, maybe I can get it scanned and post it on the Art forum.

work in progress

here it is a day later...
i spent a lot of time drawing the lettering inside the head, i showed it to nick and he said that the lettering cluttered the shapes too much, which i what i was worried about. What do you guys think? I may re-do the same words to be coming out of the mouth and fitting into the shapes of the sunbeams...I also made some other changes, i made the text across the top smaller, which isn't a big deal. Leanne, i though maybe having only three people looks like to little partially because they didn't fill the space well? I made them bigger, but we could also try more people. I want to take some more photos, i think we can do the pose better now that we can see how it looks on the poster.

Yeah, the profile is me...i guess you can still recognize me without the hair...

I changed the profile a little too.

I'd be excited to see yr Brad poster...when he died i thought about doing a sculpture of him, like a memorial.

Both designs are really

Both designs are really cool...

ti-bak's idea of more figures sounds good to me. We can do more reference photos anytime. I could even put the camera on a tripod and jump in the poses (I have a long-corded remote.)

I think with the "yelling" head, some composite/morph of two or more yelling profiles might look cool, but that's just a guess.

Also... if the buildings are to represent NYC, they could including some ore skyscaperish-buildings.

Anyway, Sarah, I think the design looks sharp and is nice how it is. The head alone (even with the text) doesn't clutter the page much, really.

thanks for the feedback

yeah, now i'm starting to think the text in the head is alright, and without the head looks too empty, too much plain red. i think what would be cool is to take a photo with a bunch of people and use them as a layer with its own color behind the three foreground figures (which definitely need work). That way i can convey the sense of a crowd without losing a central focal point.

and then i also need to add the words "workshops" and open mic" (anything else) bursting out of the mouth

with the buildings, i added some more grimy details like a water tower, antennae, and wires cause i want to depict an outer borough like queens rather than manhattan.

thanks for the feedback

another update

having the figures in the background is a really good idea, it gives it more depth and fills the space better

here is a mock up of how that'll look -- i just copied the foreground figures, but i plan on using new photos for it.

i'm up to 7 colors of ink though, i'll have to cut down. I can get rid of the 2-tone lettering without much problem. I'm probably gonna end up mixing my own colors for this.
