Books/Magazines, and Zines

Hip-Hop Poetry and the Classics for the Classroom by Alan Sitomer and Michael Cirelli
This book provides a curriculum for teaching the elements of poetry by using hip-hop lyrics as well as classic poems. It features the poetry of lyricists like Tupac Shakur, Public Enemy, Mos Def, Nas, Eminem, Talib Kweli, KRS-One, Notorious B.I.G., and more. The book is comprehensive enough that it meets 34 State Language Arts Standards, while still having enough style to satisfy any hip-hop head. There should be a book that speaks to youth the way this one does in every subject. Like an art history book that that talks about revolutionary art through the ages, from medieval engravings to punk rock posters, and focuses on art either by or for youth from ancient initiation rites to graffiti and comic books. That would be cool, right? Hmmm, somebody should make a book like that . . .

This book is packed with advice and hints on self-publishing – whether it’s a zine, book, chapbook, or newsletter. It talks about everything from layout to binding to libel, and plenty more.
